Central deals Perry loss; Northside routs Dutchtown
By M4TTHEW BROWN

Missing the services of regular senior
point guard Casey Hayward, Perry High
saw a couple of young guards step forward
and deliver winning plays Saturday in the
home gym.
Cornelius Warren sank a 3-pointer with
under four minutes left in the game, and
later Reggie Davis followed in a missed 3-
point shot to give the Panthers a comfort
able cushion against the Northside High
Eagles. The Panthers went on to win 63-
56 as the visiting Eagles went about five
minutes between field goals in the fourth
quarter.
The competitive contest between county
rivals had eight lead changes, Perry taking
the last lead in the fourth behind the hustle
plays of Michael Walker, who came out as

The new calendar year didn’t start off well
for Casaundra Wilson and the Northside
High Lady Eagles. The state semifinalist
for Class AAAA last March lost a make
up 4-AAAAA sub-region game at home to
Baldwin on Jan. 3 and was sitting at 4-7
overall.
Since then, it’s been more like the Lady
Eagles of old.
Saturday’s 66-27 non-region win at Perry
High School was the eighth in a row for
Northside. Five of the eight wins came
in sub-region games, including a rematch
from an early loss to Westside-Macon and a

But with the Panthers
trailing 50-48, Walker, on
Northside’s offensive end,
won the battle for a loose
ball on the floor. His steal
led to a tying basket. The
next time Perry was on
offense, Walker missed two
shots inside, but rebounded
both and made his third try

Warren’s trey put the Panthers ahead 57-

At Perry, sophomore

forward Tai Brown, scored

Shay Newberry and Kim

HOCO splits road games

Even with a different
philosophy (for one night
only), Westfield’s Lady
Hornets ran their current
winning streak to nine in
a row Saturday in a non
region contest at Crisp
Academy in Cordele. Coach
Jeff Eubanks said circum
stances forced him to have
his players hold the basket
ball for several minutes of
the second half, which kept
the scoring down in a 34-24
victory.
Westfield was coming off
a home win in which it
played a full-court game
with Tattnall Square and
tallied 67 points.
“For about six minutes
in the third quarter we
decided to hold the ball
with a five-point lead,” said
Eubanks about Saturday’s
outcome. “They let us do
it.
“In the fourth quarter
they got more aggressive,
but we went to the line and
increased our lead.”
Crisp actually led after
the first eight minutes 11-
6, but the Lady Hornets led
at halftime 19-15.

The Westfield boys
improved to 11-6 by out

Head coach Jake Walls
said it was a battle in the
first half with the home
team getting to the foul
line often, but his Hornets
held strong and led 31-25
■at halftime.
“We exploded in the third
quarter,” said Walls. “We
controlled things with our
defense putting pressure
on their guards.”
Matt Amrit, a senior for
ward, and James Wurster,
a freshman forward, each
scored 12 points. John
Peake added nine.
Wurster continues his
fine season with an aver
age of nine points and 4.5
rebounds.
“That’s outstanding for
a freshman,” said Walls.
