Watching out for
telephone scams
I have just spent the past 4 weeks of my life doing some
thing very unusual. I have sat at home, recuperating from
neck surgery! Let me explain, after neck “fusion” surgery
a patient is not allowed to do any lifting, housework, driv-

tion impossible to take a mid-day nap, I realized that in his
defense, he is trying to take care of us, his family. His bark
is to alert us that someone is coming near our home - he has
no idea if they are friend or foe, so he just barks.
All this causes me to think, who will alert us to the
dangers lurking that are unseen? There is an increase of
“scams” taking place these days. The scams start simply
when we answer the phone. For example, I answered the
phone (just yesterday) to hear a recording stating that I had
“qualified” for a lower interest rate on my credit card. Who
doesn’t want a lower interest rate? As I listen on, I find out
that if I was interested, I will be connected to a live operator
who can go into my existing accounts and lower my interest
rates. All I have to do is “simply” give her my credit card
information. My blood begins to boil and I hang up. A simi
lar type scam, known as “phishing” is also being reported in
our community where the caller states that your checking
account has been frozen. Next, instructions are given to call
a particular phone number and enter in your 16-digit bank
account number. Thankfully, my bank put a notice on its
website to alert members of this scam, but I worry about
those who don’t use a computer and may never see the
warning. Sadly, I have one other example of a recent phone
scams. One of my dearest relatives received a phone just
one day after she buried her oldest son to a sudden illness.
In her grief, she fell prey to a stranger who, over the phone,
convinced her he was genuine, yet quickly drained her bank
account of over $llOO. I cried for three days after hearing
her story. How could anyone be so cruel, so unscrupulous?
Make no mistake; these people are good at what they do
- they are nice and professional, and know how to say all
the right things.
The truth is, there are people out there that will do any
thing to get your personal information. We must warn our
children, our older citizens, and everyone in between that
you CANNOT trust everyone who calls you on the phone.
Do not give out any information over the phone, or the
Internet for that matter. Be alert and better yet, help me
spread the word. Tell everyone you know about these scams
