ALABAMA —-The Port of Decatur (pop. 53,929) is
the busiest port on the Tennessee River and offers access
to deep water via the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
ARKANSAS —-The state is home to three federal
fish hatcheries: Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatch
ery at Mammoth Spring (pop. 1,147); Norfolk National
Fish Hatchery near Mountain Home (pop. 11,012); and
Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery near Heber Springs
(pop. 6,432).
FLO RI DA —At 23, Barrington Irving, then a senior
at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens (pop.
2,706), became the first black and the youngest pilot to
fly solo around the globe. He completed his 26,8(X)-mile
feat in March 2007.
GEORGIA — Heaven Bound, a black folk drama
that portrays the struggles and pitfalls of a group of
pilgrims striving to reach the gates of heaven, has
been performed since 1930 at the Big Bethel Afri
can Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta. Heaven
Bound is one of the longest running theatrical produc
tions in the nation.

KENTUCKY —In 1831, the town of Fredericks
burg was renamed Warsaw (pop. 1,811) after a popular
bode of the day, Thaddeus of Warsaw, by Jane Porter.
LOUISIANA —Fashion designer Geoffrey Beene,
who was bom in 1927 in Haynesville (pop. 2,679),
became one of New Yorks top designers and designed
the wedding gown worn by Lynda Bird Johnson, daugh
ter of former President Lyndon B. Johnson. Beene died
in 2(X)4.
MISSISSIPPI —Diners at Lusco's Restaurant in
Greenwood (pop. 18,425) sit in booths concealed behind
curtains. The arrangement is a holdover from Prohibition
days when diners could eat and enjoy some homebrew
in privacy Lusco's opened in 1921 as a grocery store, and
began serving food in the 19305.
NORTH CAROLINA— BuiIt in 2001,
Blue Ridge Motion Pictures in Asheville is a full
production movie studio that serves the television,
film and recording industries and includes a film
making school, the Blue Ridge Motion Pictures
Film Institute.

SOUTH CAROLINA —When the Saluda
River was dammed from 1927 to 1930 to create Lake
Murray and a source of hydroelectric power, some 5,000
people had to be relocated, along with churches, schools
and graves. Chapin (pop. 628) calls itself the “Capital of
Lake Murray.”
TENNESSEE —AIbert Gore Jr., 45th vice presi
dent of the United Stares and winner of the 2007 Nobel
Peace Prize, split his boyhood years between Washing
ton, D.C., as the son of former U.S. Sen. Albert Gore
Sr. and Pauline Gore, and the family farm in Girthage
(pop. 2,251).
VIRGINIA —The 40-acre Lewis Ginter Botanical
Garden in Richmond began as the Lakeside Wheel
Club for bicyclists. The garden was built in the 1880 s
by millionaire and horticulturist Ginter, a founder of the
American Tobacco Co.
WEST VIRGINIA —-Track and field athlete
John Ware Jr. of Martinsburg (pop. 14,972) won a gold
medal in the long jump in the 2007 Special Olympics
World Games in Shanghai, China. 3^
