NEWS One man sentenced to 17 years; teen gets 15 in separate incident. d <?l| if Volume 138, Number 10 FRONT PORCH "Where neighbors meet" HHJ history 50 years ago: Then Mayor Stanley E. Smith Jr., outlines the reasons behind a pro posed bond issue election March 25, 1958, to finance a $250,000 extension of the city's water and sewer system. The proposal was to repay the bond using revenue realized from a new sewerage fee system. Also, in itsfirst "public” announce ment, the City of Perry makes it known to residents that they have been drinking fluoridated for “some time” (more than a month it was noted). Voted approved three-to one to have the system - at a cost of $3,500 - installed to provide the fluoride, they just weren't aware apparently that it had been done. 30 years ago: The State Department of Transportation rejects a City of Perry suggestion to install turn signals at a traffic light at the inter section of Carroll and Washington streets. Instead, the DOT told the city the state would provide "Do Not Enter” signs if the City of Perry would agree to put them up. In other news, a large group of Houston County farmers load up on a chartered bus and head to Washington D.C. to be part of a “massive” farmers rally in the nation’s capital. Also, Houston County's Commissioners balk at giving a payraise to three of the county’s constitutional officers, and that in turn sets off a show down between the three - the tax commissioner at the time, the Superior Court clerk and Probate judge - and the commission. They threaten lawsuit but never file. At the time of this writing, a notice is published in the HHJ regarding plans to introduce legislation at the General Assembly to create an arbitration board to settle the dispute. 10 years ago: Following complaints at the Perry City Council meeting that a number of dog owners are letting their dogs run free after 5 p.m. because they believe the animal control officer is off-duty, Perry Police Chief George Potter imple ments a “modified” schedule for the officer in an attempt to catch and fine any violators. - Compiled by Don Moncrief Birthdays Feb. 2 ■ Olivia Monroe Feb. 4 ■ Jay Thomas ■ Kay Thrasher E-mail birthdays to: hhj@evbnsnewspapers.com or donm@evansnewspapers.com.
