Northside edges Tift County in baseball opener
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
The “babies” have grown into
“toddlers.”
Jordan Couillard’s line-drive sin
gle with two outs in the bottom of
the ninth inning gave Northside
a 4-3 win against Class AAAAA’s
Tift County High at Dyson Field
Monday, the opening day of high
school baseball in Georgia.
“One of the first things we talked
about was that was a situation
where a couple of years ago we
might have found a way to give
it away.” said Eagles head coach
Kevin Kinsler, whose program is
coming off a surprise AAAA state
playoff appearance in 2007. But on
Monday, Northside fell behind 1-0
in the first inning and tied it, fell

top of the ninth only to rally for two
in the bottom half.
Tift County scored in the top of
the ninth on just one hit, a two-out
RBI single to left by Jacob Stinson.
The visiting Blue Devils drew a
one-out walk, and that runner took
two bases on a groundout. Stinson’s
hit came after an intentional walk.
Tift had two more runners in scor
ing position on an error, but Kyle
Farmer, the third pitcher used by
Kinsler, induced a groundout to
end it.
The Eagles had just six hits at
the plate, two of them doubles by
junior outfielder Kyle McArthur.
He doubled for an RBI that tied the
game 2-2 in the home fourth, and
Northside didn’t have another hit
and Elizabeth Weber also had a pair
of assists, while Jackie Matusiak
and Claire Jacques recorded one.
In goal, Houston County’s Kim

after the overtime period. “We
started out very poorly on defense
and were down 3-0 in the first
15-20 minutes of the game,” said
Demonette coach Phil Daly, whose
team was supposed to face Newnan

proud that our girls were able to
rally back from the deficit and give
themselves a chance to win.”

Darius McGee drew a walk after
the double. Senior Taylor Ham
broke an 0-for-3 skid with a drive to

the bases that maybe the baseball
was caught. The Devils almost had
a double play on a popped-up bunt
caught snow-cone style by the third

Clint Farmer drew a walk to load
