50 years ago:
A special testing laboratory
makes a visit to the county. The
mobile lab, according to the news
report, is designed to determine if
automobile drivers have a physical
handicap such as tunnel vision, et
cetera. In operation since 1949,
the lab, according to the news
report, has acquainted more than
70,000 Georgians with their driv
ing handicaps. Also, Perry High
School's mile relay team sets a
new state record. Team members
- running the mile in 3:42 - are:
Frank Holland Jr., Pierce Staples,
Terry Griffn and Perry Culpepper.
30 years ago:
The City of Perry receives a
check for $110,442.33 from
Georgia Power, its share of the
gross receipts receved during this
year. Also, Judith Colvin Belvin
of Perry is selected as one of
the “Outstanding Young Women
of America'' by the General
Foundation of Women’s Clubs.
Belvin is a teacher in the Houston
County school system and a
licensed realtor at the time of her
nomination.
10 years ago:
Sonny Perdue switches parties,
announcing plans he will seek the
Georgia Senate District 18 post -
a position he had held for six years
- but would run as a Republican.
Also, country music sensa
tions Alan Jackson and the band
Alabama are announced as
headliners to perform during the
Georgia National Fair. It is report
edly the second time they will be
the star attraction/performers.
And, the City of Perry votes to
back the Perry-Houston County
airport in its efforts to secure a
$243,500 loan to build 10 addi
tional airplane hangars. Along
those same lines, Perry Mayor
Jim Worrall announces paperwork
necessary to obtain a $700,000
grant for airport improvements has
been submitted. The money will
reportedly accomplish three proj
ects: Extending asphalt aprons to
hangars, a new terminal building
and upgrading the landing sys
tem and a new runway overlay
($500,000 set aside for it).

The 2008 Miss Dogwood
Pageants will be held
Saturday at the Perry
High School Auditorium.
Seventy local girls will
compete in six divisions
and the queens will reign
over the Perry Dogwood
Festival April 12 and 13.
There will be two pag
eants Saturday. At 2 p.m.,
the Tiny, Little and Junior
Miss Dogwood Pageants
will be held. At 7:30 p.m.,
the Pre-Teen, Teen and
Miss Dogwood Pageants
will be held.
The newly crowned
Miss Dogwood 2008 will
receive a SSOO college
scholarship.
Admission to the pag
eant is $5 per person and
the pageants are spon
sored by the Perry High
School Cheerleaders.

Goddard opens
campaign HQ

Journal Staff Writer
Rick Goddard opened his campaign headquarters on
Friday, with hundreds of supporters turning out and the
parking lot jammed at times.
The office, which will serve as a base of political opera
tions and a volunteer center for his campaign for congress
is located at 1302 Watson Blvd., in Warner Robins.
Goddard is running for the Republican nomination
for Georgia’s Bth District seat in the U.S. House of
Representatives. At this point he has not announced com
petition for the July primary, and is expected to square off
against Rep. Jim Marshall, the Democratic incumbent,

Police were able to trace the call
to a cell phone number, and then to
locate the owner of the cell phone,
who lived in Macon. They then

Police chast
down three
From staff reports
There was action on Jeanne
Street in Perry Friday after
noon as Perry police officers
chased down three men and
arrested them.
Capt. Heath Dykes said
that on Friday, police received
a tip that Demetrius Jones,
who was wanted on several
warrants was at a location
on Jeanne Street.
They went to the location,
and three men fled on foot.
The police officers fol
lowed on foot and succeeded
in catching all three - Jones
included.
Willie Ray Page was
charged with possession of
marijuana and possession of
cocaine with intent to sell,
as well obstruction of an
officer.
Roderick Felder was
charged with violation of
probation and obstruction of
an officer.
All are in the Houston
County jail.
Funds to go toward
food, other program
Special to the Journal
Houston County, accord
ing to a release, has been
awarded federal funds
under the Emergency Food
and Shelter National Board
Program.
Houston County has been
chosen to receive $61,562 to
help expand the capacity of
food and shelter programs
in high-need areas around
the country.
According to the release,
a local board will determine
how the funds are to be dis
tributed among local service
providers.
Under the terms of the
grant from the National
Board, local agencies cho
sen to receive funds must:
1) be private voluntary
