"Where neighbors meet"
HHJ history
50 years ago:
A “new” method of teaching
reading at Perry grammar school
gets rave remarks. First grade
teacher Frances Couey says the
results of using the “Sloop” meth
od versus “sight” is “amazing." She
says that by using the system,
which employs phonetics, first
graders can now read at a fourth
grade level.

Then Police Chief B.E. Dennard
issues a stern warning, following a
rash of incidents, to parents and/or
users of BB guns. “We have a city
ordinance that forbids discharg
ing BB guns in the city, and it's
going to be enforced,” he says.
Dennard says he’s “sick and tired”
of youngsters firing the guns inside
city limits and more precise, tired
of his officers having to respond.
“They’ve been shooting out window
panes and sliding glass doors. And
one woman received a skin wound
when she was shot in the chest."
Dennard’s warning is that anyone
over 17 caught would be charged
and brought before city court and
those younger, juvenile court.
10 years ago:
The driver of a boom truck inad
vertently hits an I-beam in the roof
of the Perry PPG Industries plant
and as a result, brings down an
approximate 80 foot by 300 foot
portion down on and around him.
He is saved from injury, according
to the plant’s human resources
director, by the steel cage of the
truck.
Also, county commission
ers deny the request by District
Attorney Kelly Burke to move out
of what was then tight quarters
and just until the county court
house was finished.
