Breitbach, after her cross
country season, became 1-
AAAAA champion in the
one-mile (5:35.43) and two
mile (12:11.15). For the first
time as a high school ath

feels 100 percent healthy.
At the county cross coun
try race, Breitbach was com
ing back from a bout with
strep throat. For a part of
her freshman track season,
she was walking around on
crutches.
“My hip flexor’s a little
sore, but nothing compared
to last seasons” she said. “I
was on crutches the week of
region, and got off them the
week I ran region. This year,
I’m glad I have not been
hindered by any injuries.”
Breitbach admitted to a
case of the jitters during the
fall cross country postsea
son. She was hoping for a
top 10 showing in the state
meet, but ended up 35th
in Class AAAAA. Breitbach
followed that up with an
appearance at a Southeast

Foot Locker and scored Elite
Runner status.

“I saw a lot of elite run

ence. There was really no
pressure this year, so I will
go next year with higher
hopes.”
Breitbach, like Pegus, had
to find other ways to moti
vate herself coming back to
high school track without a
lot of strong distance run
ners in Middle Georgia.
“When I get up to state, I
get very nervous,” she said.
“That’s where everybody
is.”
The one-mile and two
mile at state have one final
race with all qualifiers run
ning together. Rouse said
she has expectations for her
Lady Bear to reach the two
mile top 8.
“My main focus is to have
fun,” said Breitbach. “If I
start to take it too seriously,
I get nervous. I know right
now I have the 11th best
time in the one-mile and
sixth best for the two-mile.
“Hopefully I can score in
the top 10 in the mile and
top 5 for the two-mile. If I
don’t, I have two more years
to do it.”
Collins may be best known
around Houston County
High as a productive mem

pion softball club. When she
left the diamond, it was on
to the swimming pool. After
toweling off, Collins found
her running shoes, and in
those she won 1-AAAAA’s
800-meter run at 2.33.43.
It’s not her first time on
the oval, though. As a fresh
man last year she placed
third in the 800.
“It’s kind of hard,” she
said about being a three
sport athlete. “Right now

I am focusing on track.
During the summer I will
focus on all three of them.
But since I’m on track now,
I know I need to work on
that harder.
“I really just try to work
hard and have fun with
it. Even if I know I won’t
be able to win, like during
state (she has the 15th best
time out of 16 qualifiers),
I’m just going to work hard
because, like Megan was
saying, I’ve got two more
years. So whatever happens,
happens.”
Aside from the training,
Collins is spending some
time with the school’s train
er working on an injury. She
has also worked out a plan
with Rouse to where she
will sprint out at the begin
ning to get in front of the
pack. The 800 meters is two
times around the oval, so
Collins said if she does fall
back halfway, she usually
runs the last leg the stron
gest and will try to sprint
to the end passing as many
runners as she can.”
• There are two other
local region champions
plus two runners-up going
to the GHSA state meet in
Albany.
The Warner Robins
High girls were second in
1-AAAAA with 99 points.
Antoinette Howell won
the shot put competition
at 34 feet, one inch, while
Caroline Mauldin finished
second to Breitbach in the
mile run at 5:48.22.
In the Class AAAA portion
of the state meet, Northside
High’s Elizabeth Lambert
is taking part in the two
mile race as Region 4-AAAA
champion (12:41).
From Perry High School,
Jaelicia Bihbs placed second
among Region 4-AAA ath
letes in the shot put at 33-
11.25 to qualify for state.
