Campbell’s Soup one of the world’s top advertisers

As I sit

article,
a cool

moves

rainy days are always good
days for soup! I thought
our readers might enjoy this
little tidbit about one of the
biggest soup makers in the
world,
In 1869 Joseph Campbell,
a fruit merchant and an ice
box manufacturer named
Abe Anderson started a
business together that
would become an American
icon. Originally called the
Campbell Preserve Company,
they produced canned toma

Tips on the care and feeding of orphaned baby birds
Many times people
find baby birds and want
to care for them but have
no idea where to start.
Before you
attempt to
raise an
orphaned
bird, please
know that
many birds
are protect
ed by state
and federal
wildlife
laws. The
possession
of any of
these birds,

ies, feathers, nests or eggs
requires a state or federal
permit, or both. Most song
birds, however, do not fall
into this protected category.
Therefore, my article today
will be limited to found and
orphaned song- birds.
When wild baby birds are
initially brought to me I try
to assess two things: 1) Is
there something medically
wrong with the bird? 2) Is
Cookbook
can also add pages of your
own.
The recipes can be described
this way: Imagine you’re a
party, a church potluck din
ner or that you’re a dinner
guest. You tiy something and
say, “Mmmm, can I have the
recipe?” and your hostess (or
host) says, “You won’t believe
how easy it is.”
Yep, this cookbook is full
of just that kind of recipe,
with an emphasis on flavor
and ease of preparation. The
chances are good that you or
your mom will know some of
the cooks, too.
Here are a few examples
from over 200 pages.
Lil Smokies
From Ella Ann Beckham
1 (12-oz) pkg. bacon
1 pkg. little smokies
1 cup brown sugar
Cut bacon strips into thirds.
Wrap individual sausages
in bacon and place tightly
together in a baking pan.
Sprinkle with brown sugar
and bake at 300 degrees for
45 minutes.

Cheesy Ranch and Potato
Bake
From Beth Murman
1 2 lb. bag southern style
hash browns, thawed
2 10-3/4oz. cans cream of
chicken soup
3/4 cup sour cream
3/4 cup mozzarella cheese,
soups, mincemeats and con
diments. The following year,
Dr. John Dorrance a chemist
and nephew of the general
manager, badgered his uncle
into hiring him on under
the condition that he would
pay for laboratory equip
ment out of his own pocket.
He also agreed to the paltry
sum of $7.50 a week just for
the opportunity to experi
ment with all of the chem
istry training that he had in
Europe.
This turned out to be an
excellent'agreement for the
company as Dr. Dorrance
invented the “condensed”
soup by eliminating the
water in canned soup. This
saved big money on the
costs of packaging , ship
ping and storing the soup
line. Campbell’s dropped
the price of a can of soup
to a dime rather than the
30 cents they were charging
for the “uncondensed” can.
This idea caught on so well
that with the American pub
this bird truly orphaned ?
If the baby bird is injured
or sick it may be best to treat
the bird and turn them over
to an experienced rehabilita
tor. Although the personal
experience of successfully
caring for and releasing a
bird back into the wild can
be beneficial, we must not
forget that we are trying to
do what is best for the bird.
Unfortunately, some baby
birds cannot be successful
ly treated and returned to
the wild, in these cases it is
best to humanely euthanize
them so they don’t continue
to suffer.
After the health of the
baby bird has been deter
mined we next need to
decide if the bird was truly
orphaned. It is quite natu
ral for some species to leave
their young for extended
periods while foraging for
food. If we can determine
that the baby may have just
fallen out of the nest and
is not truly abandoned by
the parents, it is best to
return it to the nest. It

lie that Campbell’s officially
adopted the title “Campbell’s
Soup Company.”
Advertising success
through the cherubic
“Campbell’s Kids” who
appeared in 1904, further
propelled Campbell’s to
the top of the sales charts.
Magazine ad’s in the 1920’s
touted 21 different varieties
of soup. When radio became
is an unfounded myth that
human handling of a chick
will drive the parents away.
When feeding the
orphaned songbird it is
important to try to establish
an approximate age, because
the amount to be fed will
depend on the bird’s age.
The egg teeth at the end of
the bill are lost after 3 days.
Nestlings up to 1 week are
naked except for pin feath
ers. By 2 to 3 weeks they
should be completely covered
with feathers and starting to
fledge. At 4 to 6 weeks of
age they should begin to fly.
Nearly all the common
songbirds are insectivores,
that is they eat main
ly insects. In addition to
insects, many of the insec
tivore species eat a variety
of seeds, fruit and berries as
part of their natural diet as
well. So keep in mind, that
as the birds age their natu
ral diet should be included
as much and as quickly as
possible. A temporary home
diet could be dry cat or dog
food (Science Diet or lams

popular in the 1930’5, the
M’m M’m Good! Jingle made
the company one of the most
well known brands in the
world! Who among us can’t
sing that jingle today?! To
this day, Campbell’s is one
of the top advertisers in the
world. Even Andy Warhol
painted a famous “pop” pic
ture of a Campbell’s soup
can.
Did you know that the
original popular red and
white can design came from
a football game? Herb
Williams, a company execu
tive, attended a Cornell
University and University of
Pennsylvania football game.
Cornell’s new bright red and
white uniforms left a lasting
impression on Herb and he
decided that was the right
color combination for the
company packaging.
Several Celebrities pro
moted Campbell’s products
including, Ronald Reagan,
Johnny Carson, Donna Reed
and even Lassie! Tomato
straw to put a mouthful into
the back of the bird’s throat.
Feed until the bird stops
gaping (opening it’s beak).
If the bird does not gape,
tap the side of the beak and
shake the “nest” gently.
Longer term diets should
have supplements added to
make them more nutrition
ally complete. Mealworms,
waxworms and live insects
are added to the diet at 2 to
3 weeks of age.
Nestling songbirds should
be fed initially every 15 min
utes ( 1 to 4 day old birds
), for 12 hours of the day.
This expands to every 30
to 60 minutes for 5 to 10
day old birds after hatch
ing, and eventually extends
to every 2 hours at 2 to 3
weeks after hatching. Self
feeding should be started as
early as possible. This usu
ally begins when the bird
becomes a fledgling, leaving
the nest.

soup was one of the first
flavors of soup to be pro

the ever popular Chicken
