HCHS, NHS students named
2008 Region VI STARS

Beth Boyd of Houston
County High School and
Dallas Michelbacher of
Northside High School were
named the 2008 Student
Teacher Achievement
Recognition students for
Region VI, according to a
release. Their STAR teach
ers are Margaret Molyson
and Nelda Lawrence, respec
tively.
The STAR program,
according to the release,
is sponsored by the
Professional Association of
Georgia Educators and was
created to focus attention on
Georgia’s outstanding stu
dents and teachers.
To obtain the STAR nomi
nation, students must have
the highest score in one
sitting on the SAT taken
through the November test
date of their senior year.
Students must also be in
the top 10 percent or top 10
students of their class. Boyd
and Michelbacher earned
identical SAT scores.
The winners were
announced during the
Region VI banquet held
in Macon in March. Boyd
and Michelbacher will next
compete at the state level.

12 selected Governor's
Honors Program finalists

Twelve students from high
schools in Houston County,
according to a release, have
been selected as finalists
for the 2008 Governor’s
Honors Program.
The students were nomi
nated by their teachers,
according to a release, based
on academic achievement
and the students’ passion
for a certain area such as
mathematics, theatre, sci
ence or dance.
The candidates were
interviewed during the
end of January and early
February by a state com
mittee, which selected the
finalists.
The students will attend a
six-week summer program
at Valdosta State beginning
BOE: Conservation efforts save millions

The Houston County
School System partnered
with Energy Education,
Inc. in 1999 to design and
implement a systemwide
energy conservation plan.
Since implementation,
the initiative has, accord
ing to a release, saved
$7,865,849.72, about one
million dollars a year. The
annual savings equate to
22 to 24 percent of the
system’s total utilities bud
get and to date averages
26 percent a year over the
1998 baseline.
For example, the most
recent audit figures from
March 2007 to March
2008 revealed that the
annual savings totaled
$1,108,419.55. The most
conservative school for the
annual demand charge
month audit this school
year was Eagle Springs
Elementary School.

The people-based energy
conservation program is
managed by Ronny and
Cliff Hutto, who serve as
the system’s energy man
agers.
The main goals of the
program, according to the
release, are: to ensure fac
ulty and staff work in com
fort; to minimize energy
waste; and to save dollars
and put the savings back
into the system.
The Huttos, according to
the release, “aggressively
communicate the energy
management program to
administrators, teachers,
staff, workers and students
and heighten energy man
agement and conservation
awareness. They conduct
school audits randomly
throughout the year to
ensure energy management
guidelines are met and to
reward the best perform
ers.

“Our energy conserva
tion program establishes
accountability for energy
usage at each school,” said
Ronny Hutton, “with shut
down guidelines for end
of the day, weekends, and
long shutdown periods.
