Local students win 41 state science, engineering fair awards

Houston County stu
dents, according to a release,
brought home 41 awards
from the Georgia Science
and Engineering Fair held
in Athens at the University
of Georgia April 3-5. Of the
575 state projects, 44 of the
projects were from Houston
County. Of the 44 Houston
County projects, 41 percent
won first, second or third
place awards. In addition,
nine students won a total of
23 special awards. The win
ners are as follows:
First-place:
• Benjamin Toland,
Bonaire Middle;
• Vihn Dong, Houston
County High;
• Varun Kannan, Houston
County High;
• Johnny Fells, Northside

Boyd has received numer
ous academic honors to
include:
• Departmental Excellence
Award in Biology and Honors
Literature;
• first, second, and third
year Honor’s Awards;
• Governor’s Honors
Program Nominee for 10th
and Uth grade;
• National Merit
Scholarship Semi-finalist;
and
• 2008 Golden Eagle
Nominee for Literature.
She is a member of the
school’s Beta Club, Black
and Silver Brigade, HoCo
TV News, French Honor
Society, Psychological
Society, Symphonic Band
and the Reel Club. After
high school, Boyd plans to
study history at Clemson
University before pursuing a
doctorate in history or edu
cation. She is the daughter
of Peter and Laura Boyd.

Molyson, who has 28 years
of teaching experience, has
been teaching in the gifted
program at Houston County
High since 1993.
She is also the Science
Department Chair and has
represented the county on
committees for the Georgia
High School Graduation Test,
End of Course Tests, and
the state Science Education
Advisory Committee.
Northside High’s STAR
student Michelbacher has
served the community
through mission work, house
construction for disadvan
taged families and tutor
ing students at Parkwood
Elementary School. He has
also received many awards,
such as:
• first place, Georgia State
Beta Convention in Social
Studies;
• AP Scholar with

• Robert Molina, Houston

• Kenny Yuan, Houston

Lawrence, is a graduate of
Auburn University with a
B.S. in Education. She con
tinued her education and
received a master’s degree in
Education from Troy State
University. Lawrence has
been teaching in Georgia
for six years after retiring
from Alabama with 25 years
of teaching social studies.
She has been married for 32
years and has two daugh
ters. Her oldest child works
for the Federal Reserve Bank
in Atlanta and the youngest
daughter is a graduate stu
dent at Auburn University.
