on a fly ball, then following
a walk scored on a double

In the second, a Lowndes
error followed by singles
from Ryan Beitler and
Damian Phillips would
knot the score at one each.
But in the home half, two
singles, a sacrifice, and a
ground out would make
keep the Vikings on top 2-1.
The Bears answered right
back with doubles from
Chad Roughton and Chris
Thompson to again even
the score at two. The Bears
missed an opportunity to
score in the fourth after
loading the bases with one

loaded the bases - this time
with no outs. A double-play
grounder scored one run.
Then Phillips launched a
monster home run over the
scoreboard at Noel George
Field (estimated distance
390 feet) to put the Bears
up 5-2.
Gay pitched around
problems of his own in the
ensuing half of the inning.
Facing a bases-loaded, one
out situation, Gay induced
a pop-up for the second out
before Philip Knauer’s tum
bling catch of a fly ball to
deep centerfield retired the
side.
In the sixth, singles by
Kyle Davis and Knauer plus
a Lowndes error made the
score 6-2.
To their credit, the Vikings
- whom many had picked to
win Region 1-AAAAA but
who will also be home for
the postseason - battled
back in the bottom of the
meet. Those with multiple
chances to win state titles are
Aaron Allen, winner of the
200 meters in 21.67 seconds
and second in the 100 meters;
Jacob Grubb, winner of the
800 meters in 2.05.38 and
second in the mile run; and
Karl Burkhart , winner of the
mile run in 4:43.11 and the
two mile in 10:38.99. Warner
run (ended up a sacrifice fly)
in the second.
That was the first of four
Peake putouts.
Taylor, the catcher, also
threw out a runner at sec
ond to end the second.
Leading 5-1 after three,
the Trojans scored two with
out a hit (two walks, a hit
batter, a fielder’s choice that
got no outs and sac fly) in
the fourth.

starting to waver, two walks

allowed in another.
An RBI grounder and
another single then tied
the game at six a side.
Davis - the Bears’ No. 1
starter through the season
- took the mound in relief
in the bottom of the inning.
Perhaps still boiling from
having been called out on a
third strike pitch that had
nearly hit him to end the top
of the frame, Davis walked
the first batter. Then came
the play that will leave a
bad taste in Bear mouths
for some time.
With the first and third

The play apparently over,
Thompson returned the

WF goiter named to All-State team
Special to the Journal
Westfield golfer Curt Lane
capped off his year with a
berth on the six-player AU-
State golf team.
On April 17, Lane was the
low medalist at the GISA
Region 3-AAA competition
with a 2 under 70. He beat
out two Deerfield players
who both shot even par 72.
At the state competition
April 28, Lane and 80 other
golfers braved steady rain
for half of their round at
Double Gate Country Club
in Albany.
Lane stayed the course
and shot 2 over (74), which
earned him the spot on the
All State golf team.
Coaches Brenda Duke and
Susie Greer praised Lane for
his consistency and ability
to scramble when needed.
