Boys
know why I even both
ered. We’re going to have to
“gut” the entire house and
start over when the boys are
grown anyway.
My husband and I jok
ingly said that we were going
to install a big drain in the
middle of the kitchen so we
coy Id just hose the room
down after mealtimes. In
reality, it’s not a bad idea.
After the boys turned a
year old, we actually had
to replace the carpet in our
previous house, because
every time it rained or the
humidity was high, the car
pet reeked of sour baby for
mula.
Tal, Hunter, Ben, and Luke
all suffered from reflux and
spit up constantly after they
were fed.
And I’m not just talking
good, old-fashioned spit up.
I’m talking the projectile
kind that splatters after it
travels several feet and hits
the opposite wall.
I mean, the boys were
like “exorcist” babies.
After they spit up, I kept
waitingfor their little heads
to turn around 360 degrees
on their little necks. They
would spit what seemed like
gallons up all over the floor,
and no amount of cleaning
could completely get the job
done. Thankfully, they’ve
outgrown that stage, but now
ruin the carpet and furniture
with food, drinks, mud, glue,
markers, and a host of other
permanent stains. Food and
drink is not allowed outside
of the kitchen, but most of
my tabletops now are home
to at least one water ring.

You know what I’m talking
about. The discolored ring
that is left on the furniture
after a drink has been left
sitting on it too long. Yeah, I
know that’s what they make
coasters for, but try telling
that to my boys. I guess the
marks, scuffs, and scratches
give my furniture character.
Come to think of it, that
could be a great marketing
concept. You know, like the
“distressed” look everyone
is crazy about. We could
sell furniture that looks like
it’s been attacked by a covey
of wild boys. Hmm, I can’t
wait for them to get home
from school. I’m sure they
can work on marking up
some furniture when they
get home. Maybe I can
make a fortune selling this
old junk to some poor unsus
pecting person and then get
some really good stuff. What
a great idea...

Perry, with her husband Kerry,
and five boys, Tully, age 15,
and Tal, Hunter, Ben, and
Luke, age 13.
