Volunteers with the
Houston County Relay
for Life raised more than
$315,000 for the fight
against cancer this year,
and they’re continuing to
take donations and raise
funds to reach their goal
of $335,000, according to
Heather Gilbert of the
American Cancer Society.
Opened by Luke
Campbell, a Westfield High
School student and can
cer victim who served as
torch-runner, and by the
Survivors Lap that begins
the Relay each year, the
event brought out a crowd
of more than 3,000 peo
ple Friday at the Georgia
National Fairgrounds.
There were 99 teams
in participation, includ
ing businesses, churches,
school and club groups.
Robins Federal Credit
Union employees were
the top fundraisers with
$15,135.94. Houston
Healthcare Complex came
in second with $13,165.20,
and The Bank of Perry was
third with $12,142.20.
Individual fundraisers
who won awards were
Thaina Brown-Brake,
who took first place with
$6,218.31; Heidi Conner in
second place with $2,912;
and Brenda Strom, third,
with $2,197.28.

The annual event is a
marathon in which partic

in advance, but also keep
walkers on the track for
a relay that goes through
the night. Lighted can
dles in memory of those
who died of cancer and in
honor of cancer survivors
lined the path, and live
entertainment was provid
ed through the evening.
