DON’T BLINK: Thoughts on what really matters
\On a recent spring after
noon I am cutting grass
and thinking to myself, as I
mafce round after round on
my lawnmower. I do a lot of
thinking while cutting grass
and doing yard work. When
we lived in a neighborhood,
my neighbors asked me why
I cut the grass several times
a week even when the grass
had not grown any.
I explained to them that
that was the only place
where I could find peace
and quiet. In a house with
five small boys, peace and
quiet was very hard to find.
The sound of the lawnmow
er would drown out any
screaming and yelling from
the boys and I could pretend
for even only a few moments
that all was peaceful at my
house even if World War 111
was about to break out. But
on this particular afternoon,
recently, I was cutting grass
and thinking about time.
With the end of the
school year and graduation
approaching, I was thinking

and the pressures and problems that
come with middle age have eroded the
closeness between Frog and Gordon.
The final straw comes when Frog dis

are shocked at how old they

of them as babies.
Sometimes I just want
to put the brakes on Father

isn’t possible. With time
racing by me at what seems
like light speed, I have to
face the hard fact that it’s
not going to slow down and
certainly isn’t going to stop
for me to jump off the merry
go round of life.
That leaves only one thing
for me to do. Make the most
of every second of time that
I am blessed with. I realize
that in today’s super fast
paced world that is easier
said than done.
But it is something that I
MUST do if I want to make
the most of my life and not
feel that I have wasted it
away when I am old and
gray. A saying comes to
mind when I think of wasted
time. It goes like this. “You

have fond memories of the purple Gremlin that she sported

vinces Frog and Gordon to go on an
overnight fishing trip like old times.
On the pier, the weight of adulthood
is lifted by laughter and their love of
fishing, and the three guys discover
that their friendship was never really
lost. However, in the midst of catching
the biggest fish of all time, life brings
them back to a painful reality. The
poignant resolution of the play brings
Gordon and Frog to the realization
that life is too precious and too short
to let true friendship get away. This
play is full of the most bodacious jovi

In the big scheme of
things, it is really not going
to matter how much money I
made, how big my house was,
what kind of car I drove, or
how fancy my clothes were.
What is really going to
matter is where I am going
when I leave this world and
how I touched the people
that I leave behind. So as
time grows even closer for
my children to graduate and
leave home, I will cherish
the time that I have with
them and pray that when I
leave this earth I will hear,
“Well done, thy good and
faithful servant”.
