Continuing coach Kenny Yanzetich’s plan
of using as much young talent as possible
in varsity level summer games, Houston
County High came from behind to beat Peach
County High 6-4 in six innings Saturday at
the Bear Den. This was one of the concluding
games in the annual Crossroads Invitational
hosted by Perry High School.
Thomas Brown was Houston’s winning
pitcher in relief as he worked the final four
innings and gave up just one run. After
Brown worked a scoreless top half of the
third inning, the Bears’ offense broke a 3-3
tie with three runs and never looked back.
Brown scattered three hits to the Trojans
and walked two with three strikeouts. Peach
left six runners on base against him, and
Alex Fuss, playing third base, caught a line
drive for a double play at first base to end
the top of the fourth.
Peach County got to starting pitcher
Damien Phillips for three runs on two hits
- one an RBI single by Jordan Howell - two
walks, three wild pitches and two passed
balls in the first inning. The Trojans had
two other baserunners (no hits) but didn’t
score in the second.
Houston’s offense worked the get even at
3-3 with a two-run first and the tying run
in the second. First off, Jordan Randall hus
tled for a one-out opposite-field double and
scored on Brandon Thrasher’s hit the other

In only the second event she’s ever competed in - and she won one heat the first time she competed - Allison
Townsend was the top finisher in the 8-12-year-old Junior dragster race held at Silver Dollar Raceway in
Reynolds this past weekend. The 10-year-old, whose father and mother are both accomplished racers, won five
rounds, beating Kasey Kirksey in the finals. “She was just calm and cool,” said her father Billy, who is in charge
of the Houston Home Journal’s press room. “Her mom was all excited and everything, but she was like: ‘Aw
mom, don’t be like that...’ Just calm and cool about it all.”
way. Peach made an errant relay throw on
the hit allowing a second run in.
Greg Nelson, at the bottom of the Bear
batting order, made the Trojans pay for a
two-base error with an RBI single in the
second.
Houston went ahead in the third as
Thrasher’s second hit set up the go-ahead
single by Fuss. The Bears put a double
steal together to score, and Gary Cummings
grounded out to plate a run.
Fuss had a total of three assists plus
two putouts at third base. Taylor Simons,
the leadoff batter who hit a double in the
fourth, made a fine running catch to help
Brown close out the sixth and final inning.
Cummings, in right field, caught two deep
fly balls in a scoreless fifth.
Other Houston County results from
the Crossroads event include wins over
Jones County and Northside plus a 2-2 tie
against Tattnall Square. The Bears beat
the Northside Eagles Friday on their home
field with a seventh-inning walk-off run on
Friday.
EAGLES 11, DEMONS 4
Northside experienced some mixed results
in the last three days of the tournament.
The Eagles had the loss to Houston County
one day after shutting down Tattnall Square
8-0 on the Warner Robins High Demon
Diamond.
Saturday began with a rough loss to
Jones County back on the Demon Diamond.
