a cap and gown com
mencement program for 35
Kindergarten students May
28 in the school’s Recital
Hall. Students sang a vari
ety of songs and each stu
dent had a speaking part
in the program. Diplomas
were awarded by faculty
members Evelyn Pickens,
Jeanie Cassell, Cristi Parks
and Michelle Barker. The

Peppy Area Chamber awards scholarship

The Education Committee of the Perry
Area Chamber of Commerce, according to
a release, recently announced the following
individuals as recipients of the Frank and
Betty Estes Scholarship: Colton Wood, Carol
Gidney, Brenna Lockaby, and Jacob Parnell.
The students were recognized at the May
2008 Perry Chamber of Commerce Good
Morning Perry Breakfast hosted at Lane
Packing Company in Fort Valley.

The purpose of the Young
Georgia Authors’ Writing
Contest, according to the
release, is to: encourage stu
dents to develop writing that
represents their best efforts;
provide a context for schools
to support and celebrate stu
dent writing successes; and
encourage and recognize stu
dent achievement in writing
throughout Georgia.

Young authors
The scholarship, according to the release,
was created to reward deserving students
in Houston County who demonstrate high
ethical and moral standards and whose
scholastic grades indicate an ability and
desire for further learning.
The scholarship honors the memory of
the parents of Betty Gooden Estes, James
M. Gooden, Superintendent of Perry High
School from 1919 to 1937, and his wife
Stella W Gooden. *
