Give dad the smallest power tool in the world: Amp-up his hearing this Father's Day
Men love their power
tools. Drills for
carpentry. Chain
saws for clearing brush.
Snow blowers for tough win
ters (not here!).
But when it comes to hear
ing, men often shy away from
the one power tool that could
boost their hearing, conquer
noisy environments, and
overcome competing sounds:
The new, nearly invisible but
powerful, hearing device.
That’s why this Father’s

She instead focused on
how people in the market
asked her to sing something
because they thought she

Maybe the confusion came
from her large flashy sun

being looked upon like a rock

was lost at that point. Next,
another group of reporters
were escorted out by our BN

not meeting the freedom of

they are physically drained.
The reporters had no abil

their own mission accom

constraints that were given.
Instead they would rather
have our Soldiers who have

hours throughout the day

The reporters contin

They demanded that they

Let us continue before I start
to say things that would be
considered unprofessional to
write.
I will give credit to ABC
news and the reporter Nick
Schifrin, please forgive me
for the name if it is spelled
wrong, I am going from mem
ory. He did portray us in a
fairly accurate light and we
appreciated it.. He was only
here for a short time but he
was professional and under
stood what we were trying
to do. I thank him for being
easy to work with. Now, that
my frustrations with the press
have been aired I will con
tinue with what it is we are
actually doing.
“Untreated hearing loss
puts dads at a real disadvan
tage,” says Sergei Kochkin-,
executive director of the
Better Hearing Institute.
“Hearing loss makes it tough
er for dads to connect with
their children and grandchil
dren. It heightens frustration
•and irritation in the home.
Untreated, it undermines
family relationships.”
According to the Better
Hearing Institute, hearing
loss affects more men than
women. Six out of 10 people
with hearing loss are men.
It is common knowledge
from reports on Sadr City,
there was a labor intensive
mission to emplace large
concrete barriers along RTE
GOLD. This wall serves as
the northern boundary of the
people’s market in Jamilla,
and the Southern edge of
Sadr City. What is not always
mentioned in these reports is
the reason for the wall.
This project was complet
ed after weeks of fighting in
order to eliminate the threat
and control that JAM had on
this market and the rest of
the southern sectors of the
city. The market was a major
source of funding for the mili
tant group. JAM’S operations
were ran in a Mafioso style
with shakedowns of trucks
coming into the market, shop
owners paying protection
money in order to operate
a store inside the area, and
of course the ability of the
militant group to store caches
of weapons and ammunitions
within the shops for future
use. The militant group used
this as one of their primary
“fund raising" areas. (For
those of you reading this with
little knowledge of the past I
will give you the very small
background that should be
sufficient for my rambling on
this paper. In years past JAM
used to be a organization
dedicated to helping the poor,
orphans and widows within
their community. All of which
is a noble quest under any
one’s standards. However, at
an unknown time believed to
be around 2005 or later, they
switched their focus from
And 31 million people in the
United States have a hear
ing loss. That translates into
15 percent of baby boom
ers and one in three seniors.
Fortunately, 95% of hearing
loss can be treated with hear
ing devices.
The newest aids are sleek,
sophisticated devices that are
scientifically engineered to
provide unparalleled sound
quality in various hearing
environments. Many fit
comfortably in the ear or
on the ear and are virtually
invisible. Today’s hearing
help, to passing blame, and
in the passage of blame grew
the hatred and violence that
we see today. They shifted
their efforts from passing out
food and other goods to kid
napping, murder, and theft.
The Jayish al Mahdi consid
ers itself a very strict religious
organization but they have
shifted away from helping
and spreading their message
to being a group of thugs,
criminals, and oppressors. I
will not turn this into a story
of religion but I am sure that
most people would agree in
my confusion over their form
of religion and the oppression
and exploitation of the poor.)
I will not go into a descrip
tion of the fighting that
occurred on RTE
GOLD, but would rather
focus on what has happened
in the area since the wall has
been built. The day after the
wall was finished our soldiers
switched gears from direct
kinetic operations (fighting)
to counterinsurgency/stability
and support operations.
It is a real testament to
the abilities of the American
soldier to switch between
the two types of operations
seamlessly. One day you
are building a wall, ducking
sniper rounds and destroying
buildings and the very next
day you are drinking Chi tea
talking about reconstruction
efforts with some local shop
owners.
One of the most beneficial
relationships that we have
made since being here is with
the Iraqi Army unit sharing
the area of operations with

aids aren’t the bulky, old
fashioned hearing aid your
father may remember. It’s
the new powerful instru

Tips for Determining
If Your Dad Might Need
Hearing Aids
Ask yourself these ques
tions:
• Does he seem to have
trouble hearing on the tele
phone?
• Is it more difficult for
him to follow conversations?
• Does he keep turning up
us. The IA is still a relatively
young entity operating inside
of Iraq, but this unit is fully
capable to conduct opera
tions. We conduct daily oper
ations and patrols alongside
them and have developed a
good relationship early with
them.
The lengthy classes we
had in preparation for dealing
with IA and Iraqi counterparts
in general were essentially
useless, because when it
comes down to it, people are
people, and we all want the
same thing, a good life. We
were told not to tell jokes or
say funny things, however,
we spend a good portion of
our time over lunch laugh
ing and teasing each other
over the smallest things. We
are truly fortunate to have
them working with us. Even
the lower enlisted soldiers
hang out in the other areas
and joke around without the
use of an interpreter. Truly
impressive.
The initial assessment of
the area on the joint patrol
with the IA lead to the areas
we knew we had to fix in
order to bring the market
back to life from almost total
