Fitzpatrick takes over as Westfield baseball coach
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
There’s something special about the
middle of June for Robert Fitzpatrick
in terms of his life in baseball. It was
at this time in 1990 when he was play
ing in the College World Series with the
Georgia Southern Eagles.
Now, in 2008, Fitzpatrick can cel
ebrate the opening of a new chapter in
his career. On Tuesday he became the
new head varsity baseball coach for the
Westfield Hornets. Fitzpatrick recently
held the head baseball job at Mary
Persons High School in Forsyth and
once served as an assistant in the college
level at Mercer University.
A native of New Jersey, Fitzpatrick
had that opportunity to play the game
in front of the country on Georgia
Southern’s CWS team in Omaha. For his
career accomplishments in Statesboro,
GSU inducted Fitzpatrick into the
school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
“I had a pretty good career at Georgia
Southern,” said Fitzpatrick when he vis
ited with some of his new Hornet play
ers at the Westfield campus Thursday.

a 9-9 tie in the bottom half
of the fifth inning. Adam
Nelson was on base with a
leadoff walk, but the key
play of the inning came from
Brian Whitney, who barely

Ricks’ double plated both

the sixth.
Northside’s Jake Deason

Scott, working his first

A Brock Daughtry single
