Summer Staycation?
With the rising gas
prices, many are
closely evaluating
their summer travel plans.
The buzzword in tourism this
summer is “staycation.” A
staycation is loosely defined
as a vacation that is spent at
home, possibly including a
few day trips with no over
night travel. Unfortunately,
this is not good news for the
hotel industry or the com
munities that rely on the
hotel tax to promote its des
tination.
The upside is that while
rising gas prices are a real
obstacle when planning
summer travel, according
to a recent Travel Industry
Association press release,
“Six of 10 (59 percent)
Americans who were plan
ning a trip with their car,
truck or SUV this summer
were not changing their trav
el plans even with additional
increases in the price of gas.
One of six (16 percent) of
those expecting a tax rebate
as part of the economic stim
ulus package approved by
Congress were planning to
spend their rebate on an
overnight or day trip for lei
sure purposes.”
“Among the 41 percent
of respondents who stated
their plans would change if
gas prices rise further, the
greatest percentage would
simply drive a shorter dis
tance to their vacation desti
nation. Other expected out
comes include people taking
fewer trips and spending less
money on other aspects of
vacations as revealed belbw:
• 38 percent would drive a
shorter distance
• 36 percent would take
fewer trips and/or cancel a
trip
• 30 percent would spend
lips for sunscreen application
Special to the Journal
The following tips, provided by William E. Freeman,
MD, dermatologist and member of the medical staff of
Houston Medical Center, are provided for proper sun
screen application:
• Know when to protect yourself: Apply sunscreen
when the UV Index is 2 or higher.
• Use an adequate SPF: Use an SPF of 15 or higher
for limited exposures and an SPF of 30 or higher for
prolonged or intense sun exposures.
• Wear the right sunscreen: Wear broad-spectrum
sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB expo
sures. Ingredients that include titanium dioxide, zinc
oxide, or Parasol 1689 provide excellent broad spectrum
protection.
• Wear the proper dose of sunscreen: Sunscreen
should be applied thickly; adults require one ounce, or
& handful, per application and children require half an
ounce.
• Don’t forget difficult sites: Write BEENS on your
sunscreen bottle to remind you to apply sunscreen to
the Backs of knees, Ears, Eye area, Neck, and Scalp.
Apply sunscreen before going outside to insure protec
tion and to cover border areas under bathing suit straps
and waistbands.
• Don’t forget to reapply: Sunscreen should be reap
plied every two hours during prolonged exposures or
after swimming or heavy perspiration. .
• Sunscreen should NOT be used to increase your
sun exposure time.

Re-elect Cullen Talton
Sheriff of Houston County
The Houston County Sheriff's Office believes
in preventive maintenance on a daily basis by
providing professional, courteous, common sense
law enforcement to our citizens. We strongly
believe by working with all law enforcement
agencies and sharing information about criminal
activities, we have and will in the future continue
to have a safe place to live, raise our families, and
work in a virtually crime-free environment. Crime
stats show Houston County and its cities have a
very low crime rate compared to other areas in
our state. We will continue striving to keep these
stats low.
Again, it is an honor and privilege to serve as
your sheriff.
Thank you,
Cullen Talton
