Demon Diamond Baseball Bash
Roughton leads Beans past Eagles
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
If local high school base
ball coaches believe strong
starting pitching - not to
mention nine runs in one
clip - is the best way to
succeed in the spring, then
three such mentors might
want to check ahead to when
the 2009 playoffs begin after
what they saw on Friday in
summer tournament action.
First, there’s Chad
Roughton, veteran of two
varsity seasons for Houston
County High. The infielder
took a turn on the mound
when the Bears hosted
Northside High at the Bear
Den as part of the Demon
Diamond Summer Bash (put
on by Warner Robins High).
Roughton held the Eagles to
one unearned run over six
innings as Houston took a
2-1 victory.
For the first three innings,
Roughton recorded five of
his eight total strikeouts
while allowing just one hit.
Northside scored in the
top of the fourth on one
hit plus a Bears error, but
in Roughton’s last three
frames he induced five pop
ups caught by the infield
ers, walked two and gave up
three hits overall.
The Bears put up two runs
- all runners reaching base
after two outs - in the bot
tom of the second. Taylor
Simons singled and scored
as a ball hit by Alex Fuss
took a bad hop and resulted
in a triple. Freshman catch
er Travis Huttner singled
for the 2-0 edge,
Northside’s Jordan
Couillard was responsible
for his team’s run as he
reached base on a one-out

single in the fourth. He went
for a steal of second with
two outs, succeeded in that,
but with a wild throw by
Houston Couillard was able
to take two more bases (2-

Couillard, at second base,
also began a double play
to get his pitcher, Caleb
Peacock, out of the home
fourth still down by one

The Bear offense had just
six hits off the Northside
pitching, none of them com
ing after the double play.

just as strong on the mound
- and came through in the
clutch in the field - as Austin

coach Kenny Yanzetich for a
save opportunity in the top
of the seventh.
Jake Deason, who hit a
double earlier for the Eagles,
led off the seventh with a

First team
Trevor Whelan
School: Warner Robins
Year: Junior
Position: Striker
Impact: Recorded 17 goals - the
game winners in three - and had three
assists. Scored both goals against
Houston County to lead the team to
victories in those games. Had a 50
percent shot on goals percentage and
scoring percentage of 20 percent, Led
the team in scoring, averaging a goal a
game. Helped the Demons finish 13-5-
1 overall, Region 1-AAAAA champion
at 10-2 and earn an Elite Eight berth in
the state playoffs.
Other: Was a three-year varsity let-
from the third base slot and
doubled up the runner at
second.
Jones would steal second
base, and when Taylor Kelly
of Northside put the ball
in play with two outs, and
it looked like a tied game.
Houston failed to get the
third out at first base, but
Carston Tufts recovered
with a heads-up throw home
to Huttner that ended the
game.
Northside would take
another close varsity level
loss in the Diamond Bash
later on Friday, falling 3-1 to
Tattnall Square Academy at
Warner Robins High School.
But, Eagle coaches received
a solid complete-game outing
from Cyle Farmer, who went
the distance the week before
to beat Warner Robins in a
summer game.
Pitching coach Mark Estes
said afterwards Farmer
did a fine job of establish
ing both sides of the plate
with both the curve and the
changeup. The result was
10 strikeouts for Farmer
against the strong hitting
Tattnall Square lineup. In
fact, with two runners in
scoring position in the first
inning, Farmer fanned the
side, including a called third
strike against the highly
regarded D’Andre Smelter.
In the top of the third,
Northside had a 1-0 lead
when Farmer slipped the
baseball through the infield
for a two-out RBI.
Tattnall Square would
take over, though, with one
run on two hits in the fourth
and a two-run fifth. Smelter,
playing shortstop, caught a

DEMONS TOP TATTNALL
The defending GISA state
champions were not finished
with play on Friday, as they
took on host Warner Robins
in a tense battle. With nine
runs in the bottom of the
fourth, the Demons took a
13-8 five-inning victory in a
game that saw three of the
four Trojan coaches ejected
for excessive arguing.
Warner Robins found
itself battling from behind
twice. Tattnall Square led
3-0 in the top of the first
on two hits, an error and a
wild pitch, but the Demons
countered in the home half
with a Schafer Suggs leadoff
double, a walk and two-run
line drive double from Jesse
Scott.
Chess Malone, the left
handed starting pitcher,
helped his cause by follow
ing a walk with a deep game
tying double with two outs
in the home second.
But two walks came
around to score for Tattnall
in the top of the third (5-3).
Again, Warner Robins had
an offensive answer in the
form of one run without a
hit as Scott’s third RBI came
after an error, hit batter and
double steal (5-4).
Tattnall staked a 7-4 lead
in the top of the fourth,
but Warner Robins went on
a hitting tear in the home
half that included two home
runs, two doubles and eight
safeties in all.
