Fears shares
leumiy lead
Special to the Journal
Lacey Fears from
Bonaire was one of
three golfers to share
the lead at 3-over-par 74
after the opening round
of the Georgia Girls’
Championship, taking
place at Marietta Country
Club through tody.
The other two are Carry
Barbee of Cartersville
and Rinko Mitsunaga of
Roswell.
The trio holds a one
stroke lead over Anna
Keith of Moultrie, who
carded a 75. Defending
champion Mariah
Stackhouse of Riverdale
turned in a 76 and sits in
fifth place overall.
The 15-year-old Fears,
who is playing out of the
Championship A flight,
tied for sixth in last year’s
tournament. Barbee, 17,
and Mitsunaga, only 11
years old, are playing out
of the Championship B
flight.
A total of 28 players
(those with a handi
cap index of 14.4 or
lower) are competing
for the overall title and
are divided into three
flights - Championship A,
B and C. The top four
overall finishers age 13
and over will be invited
to represent Georgia in
the third annual Georgia-
South Carolina Girls’
Junior Challenge Match,
a match-play team com
petition between the two
states. This year’s compe
tition takes place July 18-
19 at Sea Island Golf Club
in St. Simons Island.
