50 years ago:
Perry firemen respond not
once, not twice but three times
to a fire at Perry Gin Company.
After putting it out the first time,
it then blazed up again later,
was put out again only to have
the same thing happen, accord
ing to the newspaper report.
30 years ago:
More than 2,500 members
of Christ’s Sanctified Holy
Church converge on Perry for
the church’s 41st annual camp
meeting at their headquarters
on Highway 41.
10 years ago:
Local officials announce if
they get the “thumbs up” from
state officials, they will begin the
“long awaited” filling of Houston
Lake, following construction of a
new dam. The old dam, accord
ing to the newspaper report,
had been destroyed by the flood
of 1994.
Also, the city of Perry
announces it will receive a
FEMA grant to provide $42,000
for a new emergency warning
system in Perry.

Chiefs endorse Sheriff Talton

Sheriff H. Cullen Talton
scored three big points in
his race for re-election on
Monday when the top law
enforcement officials from
Perry, Warner Robins and
Centerville turned out
to give him their public
endorsement. •

Talton, who has held the
position since beating an
incumbent sheriff 36 years
ago, won praise from all
thee.
Warner Robins Police
Chief Brett Evans said that
his force never had to worry
about getting full coopera
tion from the sheriff’s office,
that it was a high priority
and a great benefit in fight
ing crime.
Perry Public Safety
Director George Potter said
that he had been in law
enforcement in different cit
ies for a total of 38 years
and had “never seen better
cooperation.”
Talton, who heads
the Centerville Police
Department, as well as
serving as a state rep
resentative, said he had
worked with Talton in the
