HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL
How to talk to a spouse or loved one about hearing loss
By REBECCA PENNEY
Baker Hearing Aids
One of the subjects I am
often asked is how to speak
to someone with hearing
loss. Ironically, it is a time
when you both really need
to listen and yet at least one
of you is not hearing their
best.
Whether you are the
spouse, son, daughter, or
friend, you should have a
productive conversation
HONOR
From page 4A
I just wanna go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
And I’ve been keeping all
the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
“I'm fine baby, how are
you?"
Well I would send them
but I know that it's just not
enough
My words were cold and
flat
And you deserve more
than that
Another aeroplane
Another sunny place
I'm lucky, I know
But I wanna go home
Mmmm, I’ve ' got to go
home
Let me go home
I'm just too far from where
you are
I wanna come home

the other author as being
incapable of forming an opin
ion with the information pre
sented to him. The Editor
accused the author of distort
ing the facts and questioning
a local mayor. Isn’t that what
opinion is all about?
The Home Journal Editor
certainly has the right to con
test another’s opinion but he
must do so objectively or he
loses all credibility. It was
obvious that this article was
“personal”. If another author
is going to be attacked, then
that author should be identi
fied and the authors article
published or referenced so
the reader can form their own
opinion. I felt is was very
unprofessional not to do so.
Secondly, I found the for
matting and composition of
the article to be incorrect and
amateurish. Not the quality
that an editor of a newspaper
should have. Reading it was
difficult because it rambled
and was fragmented. I am
certainly not an English major,
but as an educated typical
reader I can see that there
needs to be an improvement
in the composition, punctua
tion and overall structure of
any future articles.
To the Editor, please con
tinue with your championing
of the emergency siren issue.
I feel the county needs them.
I am not sure shutting down
power grids during a storm is
a wise idea. People are afraid
enough during a storm with
out putting them in the dark
intentionally. Besides, most
storms create enough of their
own noise that would make
hearing the sirens difficult.
Maybe more sirens closer
together might help create
a more continuous warning
pattern. I will leave that to the
experts.
- James Adams, Perry
From the managing edi
tor (writer of the article in
contention):
Forgive me. I am not try
ing to have the last word
over you. I believe, I hope, I
am the kind of person who if
you put me in my place, I will
salute sharply out of respect
and hopefully learn from it.
But I feel clarification is in
order.
IT WAS NOT A PERSONAL
ATTACK on the other writer.
You used the words “almost
enraged” at him. I was shoot
ing for “level-headed" overall
but the feeling I felt was “pas
sion” not anger. Passion for
the subject itself seeing as I
live in Houston County with
my family and I have three
grown children, two with fami
with the person about their
hearing loss. It may require
that you place more atten
tion on being respectful and
patient, but it is well worth
it.
Studies have shown that
hearing loss can result in
a tendency toward reduced
physical, psychologi
cal, and social well-being.
Fortunately, hearing instru
ments like the new VOZ,
which means voice, can
begin to solve decade long
hit “I’m Already There”:
He called her on the road
From a lonely cold hotel
room
Just to hear her say I love
you one more time
But when he heard the
sound
Of the kids laughing in the
background
He had to wipe away a tear
from his eye
A little voice came on the
phone
Said daddy when you com
ing home
He said the first thing that
came to his mind
I'm already there
Take a look around
I’m the sunshine in your
hair
I'm the shadow on the
ground
I’m the whisper in the wind
I’m your imaginary friend
And I know I’m in your
prayers
Oh I’m already there
lies and one with a little one
on the way, who do likewise.
I care for their safety. That’s
why I spoke up. He was not
a target because of “who”
he is but because of “what”
he said. He could have been
Obama or McCain, I wouldn’t
have cared.
In fact, to try and keep it
from coming across as a per
sonal attack was why I specif
ically left his name off. I didn’t
want people to get wrapped
up in that versus the issue
itself. I guess I failed.
But I still feel strongly that
mentioning the fact I had gone
to a handful of Vision 2020
meetings, versus him only
attending one (to my knowl
edge) was important. I also
didn’t mention the fact it was
discussed at several Warner
Robins and Centerville City
Council meetings, as well as
the same amount of county
commission venues - 99 per
cent of which I also was at.

frustrations in less than an
hour.
Here are some thoughts
that I might recommend
about approaching the sub
ject of hearing loss with a
loved one.
• First, make sure that
you are in a good, calm
mood. Focus on the idea of
patience.
• Establish rapport. Even
if you have been together
for years, let them know
how important they are to
She got back on the
phone
Said I really miss you dar
ling
Don’t worry about the kids
they’ll be alright
Wish I was in your arms
Lying right there beside
you
But I know that 111 be in
your dreams tonight
And 111 gently kiss your lips
Touch you with my finger
tips
So turn out the light and
close your eyes
I’m already there
Don’t make a sound
I’m the beat in your heart
I’m the moonlight shining
down
I’m the whisper in the wind
And 111 be there until the
end
Can you feel the love that
we share
Oh I’m already there
We may be a thousand
miles apart
But I’ll be with you wher
And should I point out the
obvious? But I don’t say this
in bragging. I thought it would
help establish my credibility on
the subject. To suggest other
wise is like saying the meet
ings aren’t/weren't important.
You could just stay at home
and watch the national news
and still form an “educated”
opinion on the subject. That
doesn't sound right.
As far as reprinting the
author’s entire article, I felt
like it was enough to take out
the points he had made and
then address them. (Note:
To address “objectivity”, he
certainly didn’t cite any ben
efits - only cons - of a siren
system in his opinion piece.
He gave all the reasons
“against". I wanted to give
reasons “for”. And P.S. I’ll just
add this: I received a call
from a Warner Robins City
Councilman Monday stating:
“You nailed it!”)
As far as the formatting and
package.
you and how their hearing
loss keeps you from being
with them in the way you
would redly like.
• Suggest a hearing test.
They probably already know
they have a hearing prob
lem. They may even imme
diately agree to set up an
appointment to find a solu
tion.
• Let them know that you
will also be participating in
the Hearing Consultation.
You might even mention that
ever you are
I'm already there
Take a look around
I'm the sunshine in your
hair
I’m the shadow on the
ground
I'm the whisper in the wind
And 111 be there until the
end
Can you feel the love that
we share
Oh I'm already there
The message here is
these songs may not have
hit as hard at home for us in
Houston County as they did
for those troops overseas.
(Although they no doubt
did for family members with
loved ones deployed, and
probably for any veteran
who’s been on the other side
of that line: which in our area
is many.)
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen
and Marines are a tough
group. They typically tend
to try and hold back their
feelings lest it be shown as
composition, the rambling
and fragmenting (you’ll note
I printed your letter “exactly”
as sent), I guess see: “salute
sharply out of respect and
hopefully learn from it” is in
order.
Sincerely - and to note:
I "really do” appreciate you
writing for a lot of reasons
(keeping me in check is only
one). I hope I don’t sound
otherwise.
