The age of chivalry

Tips on gallantry for young men
Let's Talk Etiquette
Cynthia
Malone,
Columnist
During the month of
June, etiquette presen
tations to a great group
of teenagers finally got
to the long awaited topic
on Dating Etiquette.
This created interesting
feedback from the youth
who was reminded not to
reserve manners for spe
cial occasions only. Keep
up the good work. They
are listening to you and
aware of your expecta
tions. Some highlights
reviewed with the male
youth:
Q: What is chivalry?
A: The qualities ide
alized by knighthood,
such as bravery, cour
tesy, honor, and gal
lantry toward women.
(American Heritage
Dictionary)
•Always open doors
This is perhaps the
most basic rule of male
etiquette.
• Help with her coat
Help a lady put on or
remove her coat This
is a simple but powerful
gesture on your part.
•Help with her chair
This applies to the lady
you are escorting and
includes the unaccompa
nied lady as well.
•Give up your seat
If a lady arrives and
there are no available
seats, you should stand
up and offer yours to her.
•Give her your arm
When escorting a lady to
and from special events,
you should offer her your
arm. This is suitable for
social events, to assist her
when walking on uneven
ground -- especially if
she’s wearing high heels.
•Ask if she needs any
thing
Show her that you care
about her comfort and
needs.
Q: How can I stand
out as a good guy?
•Be polite
Being polite and courte
ous shows that you’re the
better man.

. Watch your language
Profanity exposes your
limited vocabulary and
inability to express your
thoughts appropriately.
•Respect your elders
I am specifying elders
in this case because it
seems that today many
young men think it’s not
necessary. Your turn is
coming.
• Remove your hat
indoors (imagine the reac
tion to this)
Remember grandmother
would say, “rest your hat in
the back room.” In other
words, take your hat off.
This rule seems to have
gone out the window these
days. Gentlemen remove
your headwear (caps,
hoodies) when entering a
building. Never keep your
hat on while at the dinner
table because it is poor eti
quette.
•Wait for seating before
eating
Wait until all the guests
are properly seated before
eating. Everyone should
start dining at the same
time unless directed differ
ently by the host; this is a
subtle but very important
rule.
Q: Who cares about
that whole chivalry
thing anyway?
A: Everyone wants to
associate with a man that
knows and uses proper
social skills. These men
generally are successful in
relationships and business.
A lady is always pleased
to meet a real gentleman.
Anyone that uses good
manners ALWAYS stands
out positively.
Ladies, you are next. See
the Lifestyle Section next
Saturday.

TALK If the TOWN ' From Page jB
Thanks Ms. Cladney for sharing your friends birthday
with me, and thanks for your sweet, kinds words . Call me
again, soon and let’s chat. I always enjoy talking to people
that worked for my father in law.
When I use to play golf a lot, Sara Hawkins was the lady
to beat. (Which I never did, and If I did, I don’t remember
it) She was on the course everyday, I mean everyday. It
showed. She was very consistent, winning mostly with her
putting and chipping. Well, I bumped into her the other day,
and found out that she is not playing right now. She fell and
broke her arm in two places. She is going to be fine, just
can’t play right now. So, all your golfers watch out when
Sara returns. I’d bet money, that she will be just as strong
as she was, when she steps back onto the green.
