Two dogs, three cats, 18 chickens and five boys equals one sit-com
Have you ever thought
about how comments you
say to your children sound
to other people?
For example, my boys may
be wearing their “Sunday
clothes” while climbing
a very tall tree while we
are visiting someone after
church and I will yell, “You
better not fall out of that
tree and tear a hole in those
good pants!”
Forget about the arm or
leg they may break. I’m sure
that if someone were a “fly
on the wall” at my house,
they would get an earful of
these comments daily.
It’s not uncommon to hear
“Don’t bite that dog” or

Carter Shelton learns about photography in 4-H camp
Kids participate in 4-H Photography Day Camp
Kids like to have their own cameras at an
early age. Once they hit the tween years,
youth can turn that love of cameras into a
rewarding hobby. In effort to encourage this
positive use of leisure time, Houston County
4-H held it’s first ever Photography 101 4-
H Day Camp on June 14in Perry. 4-H’ers
participated in this educational workshop
where they conducted camera experiments,
created fun photography crafts and prac
ticed homemade photo effects! All of the par
ticipants left with the increased knowledge
of lighting, composition, angles and having
exercised their creativity.
Vacationing with your pet
The vacation season is
here, and as pet owners, we
must decide what to do with
our pets while we are gone..
Several options exist; such
as taking your pet with you,
boarding your pet, having
a pet sitter come into your
home daily, and finally leav
ing your pet with a trusted
friend or relative. Today’s
article will discuss some
preparations that should be
made by families traveling
with their pets prior to an
extended trip.
Before you leave, confirm
that all vaccinations are up
to date, including the ken
nel cough vaccine. (Kennel
cough is transmitted through
the air as well as direct con
tact with other dogs). Make
sure, if it is your pets first
time to travel, that you have
medication for car sickness.
On long trips even dogs and
cats that normally ride well
at home might have some
problems. Obtain a copy
of recent medical records,
particularly vaccinations, in
case a veterinary visit is nec
essary. (Normally required
if they have to board for
any reason); If your pet is
on daily medications for any
reason, or if they have a fre
quently recurring problem
that requires medications,
make sure you have enough
for the duration of the trip,
because getting prescrip
tions filled out of town can

And then when Tal said

if the pet
happens to get loose or lost,
and also can act as a form of
identification. (I.D. tags are
also a good idea in addition
to rabies tag). Prearrange
all lodging in order to find
facilities that will allow your
pets in the rooms, or that
provide an acceptable ken
nel.
While traveling; Seasoned
pet travelers will have little
problems with bathroom
breaks, but for unseasoned
travelers bathroom stops can
be frustrating, so allow extra
time for traveling and have
frequent stops. Limit food
and water to a minimum
while traveling, for this will
help with car sickness and
reduce bathroom accidents.
The use of pet safety har
nesses are a good idea for
dogs, and many cats will ride
more comfortably if kept in
a nice carrier. Unless you
travel in a motor home, you
must also consider what to
do with your pet when you
stop to eat. Do not leave
until Tully kicked the ball
out from under me while I
was standing on it”. Tully
then so innocently says, “I
didn’t think he would get
hurt when he fell off of it”.
That is the big problem with
my boys.
They just don’t THINK..
Last week while we were
at the beach, Hunter and
Ben were arguing. Finally,
Huntfer said, “I’m going to
throw you off the balcony”.
Ben said, “Okay, you just
try”.
So they actually go out on
the balcony and Hunter tries
to lift Ben to toss him over
the rail with no luck. Then
we heard Hunter finally say,
“Stand on that chair. I can’t
lift you from the ground”. I
them in an unventilated car
or truck in warm weather,
because this could lead to
heat stroke.
Finally, remember as you
walk your pet in the com
mon walking areas at your
stops, that many other pets
have also been there deposit
ing their fleas and ticks, so
use appropriate flea and tick
preventatives so that you
don’t pick up any unwanted
guests. ,

Drinking alcohol when pregnant
can have devastating results
QUESTION: I just
found out that I’m preg
nant. When the doctor
told me, he warned me
not to drink anything
with alcohol in it until
the child is born. I’m
used to having a few
beers after work and I
like a cocktail several
times a week. Is it really
necessary for me to give
upall alcohol until my
baby arrives? ,
DR. DOBSON: I urge you
to heed the advice of your
physician.
That precious baby inside
of you could be severely
damaged if you continue
to drink in the next few
months. Your child could
have what is known as “fetal
alcohol syndrome,” which
can cause heart anomalies,
central nervous system dys
function, head and facial
abnormalities and lifelong
behavior problems. Fetal
Alcohol Syndrome is also
thought to be the leading
cause of mental retarda
tion. It is a terrible thing
to inflict on a child. Babies
can be harmed by alcohol in
the blood of the mother at
any time throughout gesta
tion, but they are especially
vulnerable during the first
trimester. That’s why you
should not drink during the
remaining seven months
of your pregnancy; but by
all means, don’t swallow a
drop of alcohol right now.
You may remember the
story of Samson in the Old
Testament who terrorized
his enemies, the Philistines.
Before he was born, his
mother was told by an
angel that her child was
destined for greatness, and
that she must not weaken
him by imbibing strong
drink while she was preg
nant. Medical science has
now verified the wisdom
of that advice. That’s why
a similar warning to preg
nant women is posted by
law wherever liquor, beer or
wine are sold.
For you and for all preg
nant women and those who
anticipate becoming preg
nant—don’t take chances
with your babies’ future.
There is no level of alcohol
that is known to be safe.
Abstain for the entire nine
months. You and your baby
will be glad you did.
QUESTION:
Sometimes my husband
rent house was being built.
Luke has always loved to
throw rocks, and shooting
them is even better.
He had a slingshot and
was having a high old time
shooting at cars as they
traveled by the house on the
road.
One of our friends hap
pened to be driving by the
house on the way to his
hunting club. Later, he
told me that he saw Luke
standing by the road with
his slingshot. Our friend
thought, “He’s n<>* really
going to shoot at this truck”.
And then when he sees Luke
pull back the slingshot and
let it go, he thinks, “Yep, he
just did.”
Thankfully he missed.

damaging?
DR. DOBSON: Yes, I do.
You and your husband should
present a united front, espe
cially when children are
watching. If you disagree on
an issue it can be discussed
later in private. Unless the
two of you can come to a
consensus, your children’s
perception of right and
wrong will begin to appear
arbitrary. They will also
make an “end run” around
the tougher parent to get the
answers they want. There
are even more serious con
sequences for boys and girls
when parents are radically
different in their approach.

physical. He comes home

The mother is permissive by
nature. She worries every
day about the lack of love
in the father-child relation
ship. Eventually she sets out
to compensate for it. When
Dad sends their son to bed
without his dinner, Mom
slips him milk and cookies.
When he says “no” to a par
ticular request, she finds a
way to say “yes.” She lets
the kids get away with mur
der because it is not in her
spirit to confront them.
What happens under these
circumstances is that the
authority figures in the fam
ily contradict and cancel-out
each other. Consequently,
the child is caught in the
middle and often grows
up hating both. It doesn’t
always work that way, but
the probability for trouble
is high.
The “middle ground”
between extremes of love
and control must be sought
if we are to produce healthy,
responsible children.
