were lost in a fire which
destroyed the church clerk’s
home some years ago, so it is
therefore impossible to recon
struct an accurate history of
the beginning years of the
church. In his “Historical
Sketch of Houston County
Churches” published in
1923, Dr. Walter M. Lee says
that, “The first Southern
Baptist Church established
in Houston Country was
no doubt the Haynesville
Baptist Church.”
According to Dr. Lee,
Haynesville was one of the
earliest and strongest sup
porters of the Georgia
Baptist Convention. He also
says that Haynesville had a
leading part in the founding
of the First Baptist Church
of Atlanta. According to
Dr. Lee, “members of the
Haynesville Church were
financially independent and
very liberal.”
Membership prior to the
Civil War consisted large
ly of slaves, and in 1862
there were 39 white mem
bers and 102 colored mem
bers. Haynesville joined the
Rehoboth Baptist Association
in 1837 and at the 64™ asso
ciational meeting in 1901 the
Haynesville delegates were
A.H, Daniel, A.J. Skipper,
and the pastor, Reverend
W.H. Norton. At this meet
ing Haynesville reported 18
members and total finances
of $602.25.

The older church building,
which is believed to have
been the original building,
was torn down in 1956, and
some of the lumber and mate
rials were used in construct
ing the old church sanctuary
which is of brick structure.
During this building period
services were conducted in
an old store building owned
by Mr. Cecil and Mrs. Lelia
McCraven in Clinchfield.
The old sanctuary was occu
pied and dedicated in 1958.
In 1966 an educational
building containing eight
classrooms, two restrooms,
and a kitchen were added.
In 1970 two additional class
rooms and a baptistery were
added.
The church budget for the
year 1975 was $13,880.00
with $1650.00 going to mis
sion causes. Membership
for the year was 70.
In 2000 a Family Life
Center was erected; It con
tains a full basket ball court,
kitchen, social area, stage
area, six classrooms and two
restrooms.
In 2003, the property
where the new sanctuary
and parking lot is located
was purchased.
