golf carts
Since most of the local
elections are over, it
seems everywhere I
go, all the talk is about the
usd of golf carts on the pub
lic streets. I started working
on this story a few weeks
ago after returning from
St. Simons. Everywhere we
went, Golf Carts and what I
called electric cars, were on
the streets.
I noticed each of the golf
carts had flashing amber
lights on top and a (Slow
moving Vehicle or Tractor)
sign on the back. The electric
cars had a Georgia license
plate with a yellow triangle
with “Law Speed Vehicle” in
the center of it.
Julie and I talked about it,
and figured that St. Simons
had passed some local ordi
nance to allow the use of
the carts on the city streets.
I just hadn’t seen a license
plate like that. We thought
this would be a good idea for
Perry. I had several people
over the past few weeks tell
me they had been stopped in
Perry for being on the street
in a cart. They had been
told it was illegal and would
be written a ticket if caught
again.
So, I went to see Chief
George Potter about the
laws concerning the use of
such carts on the streets. He
offered to make me a copy
of the laws that he thought
applied without him offering
opinion on whether or not it
was legal. When I got home,
I started wading though the
Georgia Motor Vehicle and
Traffic Codes.
While I was researching
this, I noticed WMAZ TV
had a story on the use of
carts that was prompted
by an advertiser. Shortly
after that, The Telegraph
came out with a story on
the use of the carts and

The Perry Fire Department has
found a piece of its history.
Making a commitment, several
firefighters aim to preserve and restore
their findings.
A dilapidated 1951 F-7 Ford Fire truck
was found in December of 2006 by
sheer accident. Chief Joel Gray, along *
with Lieutenants Billy Gordon and
Robbie Rowell were at the city barn to
check on another truck that was being
stored there when Gray noticed what
seemed to be a truck under piles of
rubbish and wild plant growth. Gordon
and Rowell began to pull away the over
grown plant mess and realized that it
was Engine 21, the first new fire truck
the City of Perry had ever purchased.

Firefighters work on restoration of Engine 21.
Engine 21 went out of service in the

Shortly after the discovery of the
