Perhaps with a little extra motiva
tion, a team of Perry Junior League
All-Star softball players stormed
through Jasper County twice
Tuesday in Monticello to win the
Dixie Youth softball 10 and under
state championship.
The champions are now slated
to travel to Louisiana for the Dixie
Youth World Series, which begins

Perry Junior League defeat

Tuesday, but the story of the tour
nament took place Saturday when
Perry went to face the host club for
what it believed was a 10 a.m. start.
As head manager Robert Anderson
related it, the Jasper team didn’t
show up for this starting time, which
he said should have been a forfeit.
According to his interpretation of
the rules, a team has 15 minutes
after the scheduled start to arrive or
else the other team gets the win,
Anderson said the Jasper team
instead was given until 11:30 a.m. He
protested, but it didn’t go through.
Jasper won the game 6-5. When
the game ended, Anderson said his

With only four hits at the plate,
the Warner Robins American Little
League 11-12 softball team fell to
Pioneer Little League of Columbus
6-2 Wednesday in the state tourna
ment semifinals at West Point Little
League near LaGrange.
“They had their best pitcher out
there, but we put the bat on the
ball, but we couldn’t get it past the
infield,” said manager Scott Barker.
“Both teams played hard. Most of
their runs came on errors we made.
We have nothing to be down about.
We just couldn’t get the hits when
we needed them.”
Morgan Whaley and Sydney
Barker each had two hits. Barker
also had five strikeouts pitching as
she kept the Pioneer clean-up batter ‘
in check the whole game.
Overcoming inclement weather
and even a player injury, the Major
Girls moved on to the semifinal
round with two pool play wins.

From Houston County,
Georgia, to the gold medal
platform to receive the top
prize in Olympic women’s
gymnastics at the 2012
Games in London ... a long
shot, yes, but a shot made
a little shorter with the
resurgence of a competitive
gymnastics program at the
YMCA of Houston County.
Back in the spring, the
YMCA brought in a new
leader for competition gym
nastics instruction. She’s
Mandy Williamson, and
she’s looking for this sport
to experience a real boom
locally in the years to come.
Williamson has five years of
coaching experience already,
and she’s one who did her
time as both a competitive
gymnast and a cheerleader.
“I’m planning to bring a
successful gymnastics team
that will eventually build
up to have levels 3 through
Optionals, more close to
what you could call Olympic
level,” said Williamson, a
native of the middle Georgia
area and a student at Macon
State College. “I’ve worked
here previously.
