The hobo’s history
The arti

last week

from the
Great
Depression
really got
a lot of
response
from our
readers. I

hope it got folks to thinking
about difference about things
we really need and things we
just want. When I went yard
saling this weekend, I bought
lots of things that I was need
ed for a small fraction of
what I would have paid in
the store. For instance I got
a nearly new set of Addidas
walking shoes for one dollar!
They usually are about S4O
on sale. I got a brand new
motorcycle cover for $3 that
normally costs about S4O
new also. As soon as you buy
something and take it out of
the store, it becomes used so
why take the hit?
Hope and I went to see the
new American Girls movie,
Kit Kittredge. It is set in the
Depression era in Cincinnati,
Ohio. Two of the young
sters in the film were Hobo’s
and told about secret symbols
used by the Hobos to iden
tify safe and unsafe places.
Hope asked me what a Hobo
was and I realized that the
term is really quite foreign
to youngsters so I thought it
would be interesting to learn
more about the Hobo subcul
ture of the time period.
Scholars aren’t really sure
where the term came from,
whether it is a derivative of
hoe-boy, or homeward bound,
no one is really sure. A
hobo travels to find work,
a tramp travels but doesn’t
work and a bum doesn’t do
either according to hobo
websites! When times were
tough, a lot of men became
hobos, jumping trains (which
is now illegal by the way!) to
travel into bigger cities look
ing for work. Hobos often
gathered together by rivers
for water to drink and clean
with in camps called „hobo
jungles%o. Women and chil
dren often lived the hobo
lifestyle as well. As long as

Destiny Brown, a student at
Morningside Elementary, and
daughter of Tonya Spivey of
Perry, has been selected as a
finalist in the Pre-Teen Georgia
Academic and Enrichment
Program to be held July 26-
27, in Atlanta. The program
involves young ladies 7 to 12
years of age based on their
academic achievements, com
munity service, personal skills
and abilities, and general
knowledge.
there have been trains, there
have been hobos. Some just
enjoyed the free lifestyle and
others found permanent jobs
and homes after the Great
Depression. If a hobo found
a home with a picture of a
cat scratched on the fence
post, that was a sign of a kind
lady and they knew that they
could get something to eat
there. Most hobos were not
deadbeats and would perform
some kind of chore or work
for any handouts they would
get. There is a whole genre
of antique/collectibles know
as tramp art that were made
often from popsicle sticks or
twigs by traveling hobos in
exchange for meals or jobs.
A lot of it is now quite valu
able.
Some famous people once
lived the hobo lifestyle
including Jack London,
Clark Gable, James Michener
and even Jefferson Davis.
Emmett Kelly was famous
for his clown hobo charac
ter, „Weary Willie%c and
Red Skelton’s „Freddy the
Freeloader9k. There were
famous Hobo poets and musi
cians such as Boxcar Willy,
Mister Bojangles and many
others. If you enjoyed the
soundtrack from the movie,
“O Brother Where are Thou”,
with George Clooney a few
years back, find the song “Big
Rock Candy Mountain”, it is
a hobo song with a lot of the
special lingo they used dur
ing that time period.
There was actually a hobo
code of ethics and there is
still a hobo convention held in
lowa each year. Most hobos
were not bad people, just peo
ple down on their luck but
just like anything there were
always a few „bad apples%c
that ruined the reputation
overall. If you would to learn
more about this society or
the symbols they used, check
it out at your local library
or favorite Internet search
engine! Happy Collecting!

Making a good
first impression
Let's Talk Etiquette
Cynthia
Malone,
Columnist
We gave tips last week
on gallantry for young
men. Several young men
indicated their willingness
to practice better social
skills and etiquette during
recent classes. Those pre
sentations were custom
ized to help young adults
prepare for many of the
challenges and opportuni
ties that they may face at
some point in their lives.
The young ladies in
attendance were also inter
ested in a adapting to a
few of the traditional val
ues. They are not uncon
scientiously accepting poor
behavior as “being cool”
for the convenience of hav
ing a relationship. Not
these teens! We highlight
ed the following tips:
Make a good first impres
sion
No matter how you meet,
the first impression is last
ing.
•Be courteous and con
siderate to others.
•Maintain good posture
when walking (gracefully)
or sitting properly.
•Maintain your poise
showing confidence in you
ability to handle demand
ing situations.
•Your conversation (the
volume, language, gossip
ing)
Have fun
•When the time is appro
priate and you are on a
date, be a fun date.
•Be polite. This will
indicate that you prefer to
Part 2: Leaving Your Pet
When You’re on Vacation
In my last article, I dis
cussed some simple prep
arations that need to be
considered when traveling
with your pets. This week’s
article, I hope, will help you
to choose the appropriate
boarding
kennel or
pet sitting
service
for your
pet while
you are on
vacation.
Refer
rals are

pet sitting service or board
ing kennel. If you have no
personal referrals to guide
you in choosing a pet sitter,
ask the service for a list of
references.
A competent service
should be happy to provide
you with a list of satisfied
clients. Make sure that
the service has all of the
necessary insurance and is
bonded before you turn the
key to your home and your
pet over to them.
Provide them with writ
ten instructions for all the
services you wish them to
perform as well as your vet
erinarians name and phone
number.
If possible, ask a neigh
bor to note the arrivals and
departures of the pet sitter
as well.
The first and best step to
take before boarding your
pet at any facility is to visit
the facility and request
to see the kennels. Look
around and see if the pets
have water and if the ken
nels are clean.
I would be leery of any
kennel that won’t allow you
to visit the boarding areas.
If the facility environment
meets your standards, then
inquire about the care pro
vided. Most reputable ken
nels will require your pets
lifestyle
be treated like a lady in
return.
•Don’t assume you are
a couple too quickly and
become possessive “my boy
friend.”
Be appreciative
•Show some appreciation
and enthusiasm for a nice
evening;
•Always say “thank you”
whether this is the last date
or not. You will know if
there is some attraction.
Communication
This important time of
your life should be regarded
as a fun learning opportu
nity.
•You learn a lot about
yourself - especially what
you appreciate in a relation
ship. Be prepared to share
this honestly.
• Enjoy activities that
cause conversation so you
can learn more about your
date.
•If relationships seem
rocky (use of mean words, or
uncomfortable aggression)
you may not be compatible.
This is not “just part of it.”
Respect
•Respect begins at home
and carries over into every
area of our lives.
•Show respect to and
introduce your family.
•Respect your curfew (he
will too.)
Dress appropriately
• Dress modestly and
appropriately for the occa
sion. The elderly would say,
“to leave something for the
imagination.” Rely on per
sonality and confidence for
your appeal.
•A properly dressed young
lady knows a pop of color
usually applies to acces
sories, not the hot colored
under attire worn beneath
sheer garments. Be careful
of exposed straps, strings or
revealing any parts of the
anatomy that will give the
wrong impression.
to have all contagious dis
eases vaccines. This is for
the protection of your pet
as well as the others in the
facility.
Also ask how the ken
nel controls fleas and ticks,
because many kennels have
no parasite control and
your pet may carry them
home upon release. I would
not consider a bath upon
release as parasite control,
because fleas will be bit
ing your pet the entire stay
causing discomfort and skin
irritations.
Once you have chosen a
kennel and are confident
with their care, many of the
following procedures will
be the same. Leave phone
numbers where you can be
reached as well as you vet
erinarians phone number.
Make sure you leave specif
ic written instructions for
the care of your pet.
Having all of your pets
care instructions and medi
cation instructions written
down makes our job much
easier. Have plenty of med
ications available in case
you are delayed on your
return.
If your pet has a sensi
tive digestive system, you
may want to bring your
own food to prevent a diet
change that can cause vom
iting or diarrhea. Contact
your veterinarian when you
will be gone for long peri
ods of time and let them
know how they should care
for your pet if they get sick
or hurt. Most veterinar
ians have boarding facili
ties, and you might strong
ly consider boarding a very
old pet or one with more
serious medical problems
with them.
This will assure that
proper medical care and
treatment can be provided
on a daily basis.
Remember, boarding
room fills up fast during
the summer and holiday
seasons so make your res
ervations early.
