Paul and Timothy were
so encouraged by the
Macedonians that they
urged Titus, who had
already made a beginning
among the churches, that
he should return and com
plete the good work he had
started.
“You people there are
leaders in so many ways
- you have so much enthu

us. Now I want you to be
leaders also in the spirit of
cheerful giving, ” wrote the
Macedonians.
“I say this not as a com

earnestness of others that
your love also in genuine.
For you know the grace of
our Lord Jesus Christ, that
though he was rich, yet for
your sake he became poor,
so that by his poverty you
might become rich. ”

CHURCH'S for
CHURCHES

The congregation of the Oldfield
Baptist Church held Vacation Bible
School this week with about 90 chil
dren from all across the community
in attendance.
At Thursday’s night’s gathering,
their pastor, Dr. Stephen Summerow
and Minister Charleather Greene led
a worship service dressed in Hawaiian
clothes to go with the theme of
“Outrigger Island.”
The children were taught to “Know
the truth, Speak the truth and live
the trutch, “ and were told that the
Bible is their instruction manual.
Rickayla Jackson was in charge of
the VBS.
of sincerity, and the spirit
of sharing, Paul encouraged
the Macedonians to contin
ue the good work that had
been begun through them.
“Having started the ball
rolling so enthusiastically,
you should carry this proj
ect through to completion
just as gladly, giving what
ever you can out of whatever
you have. Let your enthu
siastic ideas at the start
be equaled to your realistic
action now.
“If you are really eager
to give, then it isn’t impor
tant how much you have to
give. God wants you to give
what you have, not what
you haven’t. ”
Do you suppose when
Paul penned his message
to the Macedonians, he had
any idea that he was also
lending encouragement to
the churches of Houston
County, Middle Georgia,
and others throughout the
nation, in a day and time
that he would not live to
see?

Jesus' late arrival in history
According to Bible chro
nology, Adam was placed
on earth around 4000 B.C.
and Jesus was born approxi
mately 3 B.C. During this
4,000 year interval, billions
of people had lived and died
before Jesus’ arrival. In
the great flood of 2345 B.C.
alone, an estimated 9 bil
lion people perished without
knowing Jesus. Only eight
people survived the flood
and repopulated the earth:
Noah and his wife, his sons
Shem, Ham, Japheth and
their wives.
From Adam to the time
of Jesus, six world empires
have flashed across the pages
of human history: Egyptian
(until 1491 8.C.), Assyrian
(1491-606 8.C.), Babylonian
(606-538 B.C), Persian (538-
333 8.C.), Grecian (333-44
8.C.), and Roman (44 8.C.-
476A.D.). In Biblical history,
patriarchs such as Abraham,
Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses,
David, and Solomon never
heard of Jesus or had any
foreknowledge that he was
coming to earth. Neither
did such well known Biblical
personages as Daniel, Elijah,
Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Samuel,
Joshua, Nehemiah, Samson,
Gideon, Rahab, Ester, Ruth,
etc. The list goes on ad infi
nitum.
The late arrival of Jesus
in history brings up the
question of salvation for
those whose lives predated
His birth. That’s because
the Gospels, Acts, and
the Pauline epistles claim
that salvation comes only
through a personal knowl
edge of Jesus and faith in
Him. Those born before
the Christian era would
have no knowledge of Jesus
or the plan of salvation.

Parables to Ponder
Addressing this question
are the authors of Hebrews
and Romans. Hebrews 11:2
declares that men who lived
prior2oto the time of Christ
were saved solely by their
faith in God: “By faith, the
men of old received divine
approval.” Romans 4: 3
cites Abraham’s example:
“Abraham believed God and
it was credited to him as
righteousness.” In sum
mary, those who predated
Christ were justified by their
unswerving faith in God, not
through any knowledge of
Jesus.
Today, two-thirds of the
world’s population, amount
ing to some 4 billion people,
follows non-Christian reli
gions. According to New
Testament theology, these
multitudes are all doomed
and damned to hell. Additive
to this number are the
tens of billions of adher
ents of other faiths such as
Islam, Judaism, Hinduism,
Buddhism, Taoism, etc., who
have died not knowing Christ
during the 6,000 years since
Adam. If this be so, the
gates of hell are wide and
only those fortunate enough
to hear the gospel message
will see the heavenly vision.

HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL
"Let the spirit move you"
There are many in our
communities who have
never heard the gospel mes
sage. Others have heard it,
but do not fully comprehend
its ramifications. Christian
fundamentalists are too
ready to condemn those to
hell who don’t believe as
they do. Is there a gospel
of a second chance? Several
scriptures imply there is.
I Peter 4: 19 states that
Jesus, between His death
and resurrection, went
into the depths of Hades
(Old Testament Sheol) and
preached to the disem
bodied souls imprisoned
there. When Jesus ascend
ed from Hades, according
to Ephesians 4:9-10, He led
away from its chambers a
host of captives. Further,
Romans 11:26 declares that
“all Israel will be saved.”
If God has a plan of salva
tion for the Jews who deny
Christ, who is to say that He
doesn’t have a plan for the
righteous who have died not
knowing His son.
