On making
deadlines,
winning ribs
Missing a deadline
is something that
I have always had
to stay on people about.
If one of our newspapers
is one hour late getting to
the print shop, this usually
equates to three hours in the
press and mailing room. This
is especially bad on Friday’s
during football season. The
press crew comes in late and
they go to press around mid
night. So, running late can
mean 4 in the morning.
I usually am the only one
that can hold up the press to
get in a late ad, late break
ing news or anything, with
out causing a problem. Well,
at least not for me.
This past Friday when I
was supposed to turn in my
column, I was setting up for
the barbecue cook-off in Fort
Valley, The Hambone Jam.
My plan was to go over early
Friday morning, get set up
and come back to the office,
finish my work and column.
I got so wound up getting
ready for the cook-off, see
ing old friends and doing
a little politicking, I com
pletely forgot about writing
my column. It wasn’t until
the next day that I thought
about it. It was too late
even for me. The presjs had
already rolled.
I did place third in ribs out
of 30 teams, so I was happy.
This whole column thing
has always been hard for
me. Anybody can write one
or two, but to come up with
something each week is
hard. Ask Larry Walker!
My dad was always the
best columnist in Houston
County, and frankly always
will be. It was always
hard to write a column
because everyone wanted to

“We’re putting the key in the ignition.
Right now the key is not in the ignition.

“I’m tired of looking at the car. That
car is going to be outdated after awhile.
So that’s where we are today.”
Thus said acting Warner Robins Mayor
Clifford Holmes in regard to the G-RAMP
