Cooper, 56, is a former
Marine who worked for
10 years as a Muscogee
County sheriffs deputy in

County.
Cooper has worked as an
agent in charge of DEA offic
es in the Bahamas and Port
St. Lucie, Fla. He retired in
December, and had a goal at
that time of returning to law
enforcement within a few
months, he said.
His wife Deborah, served
as a Houston County deputy
from 1984 to 1991. The two
met while Cooper was work
ing on a drug case in the
county.
Cooper said he found out
about the Centerville open
ing the day before deadline
for applications.
Centerville has been with
out a permanent police chief
for more than a year. The
vacancy began June 1, 2007
when Chief Ernie Pardo left
on medical leave. The coun
operate low speed vehicles
will be restricted to subdivi
sions, while the city looks at
other options, it was deter
mined.
Low speed vehicles are
not the same as golf carts,
although they do resemble
them. Low speed vehicles
have headlights and tail
lights along with other
features that are found on
cars. The low speed vehicles
have to meet certain speci
fications to be considered
vehicles and not golf carts.
The council also voted to
revoke alcohol licenses for
one year from businesses
that were determined to
have gaming machines

State Representative Willie

Fairburn made • a counter

Cooper was selected from

machines that were not
reported to the city.
The change will make
enforcement easier for the
police department, it was
noted. Previously the busi
ness owners that were cited
found loopholes such as
changing managers or own
ers. Council members said
they were hopeful that the
forfeiture of alcohol licens
es’ for breaking the law will
help.
