Elections, veterans end being nn Americen - 3 things we can take pride in
Many of you grew
up in the Cold
War Era with the
fear of Soviet aggression and
nuclear attack. However, I
had the privilege of growing
up during the Reagan/Bush
administration fearing noth
ing or no one.
Yes, military spending was
at an all time high but so was
American patriotism. I worry
my children’s generation will
not have the same sense of
security my generation felt
but they do deserve to grow
up with the same sense of
patriotism and pride of what
it means to be an American.

Staying connected while on the Internet
In its simplest terms,
the Internet is the
world’s largest delivery
system, and what it delivers
is data. The net seems sim
ple until you start getting
behind the web page and see
the details involved, then it
becomes quite remarkable.
Really, 20 years ago, if you
told someone that one day
you will be able to send a
message and receive a reply
by computer, to someone in
Japan all in less than five
minutes, you probably would
not have been believed.
Or, that you would be able
to open your own business,
without leaving your home,
would have gotten you some
strange looks.
Well that day is here and
it’s called the Internet.
Remember that the Internet
is not just one big network,
but rather a network of big
networks. About 90 percent
of what makes the Internet
work is hidden from your
eyes and out of your hands.
But, trust me, it’s a good
thing.
Do you really want to be
bothered with all the details
of how data is routed from
Point A to Point Z? For most
people, not really, you just
want it to work.

So let’s talk about Internet
connectivity and taking con
trol of your Internet connec
tion.
Sudden loss of connectiv
ity can normally be tracked.
Modems, network cards,
and cabling rarely just die.
Something has to kill it. The
best question is when did it
work last? More to the point,
what has changed since it
last worked? This could be
anything from a lightning
storm that created a surge
of electricity damaging your
hardware to moving the
computer from one place of
the house to the next and
not plugging something that
was previously plugged.
Again, with sudden loss
of connectivity, the best
solution is decide when it
worked last and what has
changed since. This is usu
ally a hardware problem.
The most agonizing con
nection is the intermittent
connection. You know what
I mean; you’re online surf
ing your heart out when all
of a sudden, wham, you’re
kicked off. You get connected
again; start surfing, no prob
lem. Next day same thing,
surfing and you’re kicked
off again.
This is normally not a hard
ware problem. Some inter
mittent errors are caused by
environmental factors. For

Barack Obama is the right
man for the job. Obama was
not my choice but now he is
my President and abqve all
America’s President.
As Americans we must
teach our children patriotism
and that means respecting
the office of the President
of the United. States. With
voter turnout at an all-time
high, the American people
have spoken.
On Jan. 20, 2009, Obama
will be the leader of The
United States of America
and head of the free world, a
position that deserves every
American’s deepest respect.
One of the most destruc-
instance, excessive network
traffic or even interference
from another device.
Other times, it may be due
to the way your Internet
Service Provider handles
connections that may have
gone idle or are using too
much bandwidth.
For example, when you
are online you are using
bandwidth. Some ISPs have
software which monitors
Internet connections. If
there is no activity, i.e. you
quit to make a sandwich,
then you will be automati
cally disconnected after a
certain amount of time.
If you’re one of the mil
lions of people who have not
yet traded in your modem
for a fancy new broadband
connection, you’ve probably
noticed that dial-up service
leaves a few things to be
desired.
Unless you’re home is con
nected with an extra phone
line, you’re familiar with the
epic internet-versus-tele
phone struggle. You’ve prob
ably noticed that your Web
surfing experience is con
siderably slower than that
of your broadband office or
friends.
Let’s take a look at a cou
ple of annoyances and see if
there is a solution.
Sometimes it’s not even
your fault, like the busy sig
nal when you try to dial
up. If your ISP does not
have enough phone lines
to handle dial-up traffic at
peak times, your modem will
encounter a busy signal. If
this just happens once in
a while you’re probably ok
with it.
But if it continues, then
you need to contact your
ISP and complain about the
"As Americans we must teach our
children patriotism and that means
respecting the office of the President of
the United States."
tive things we could do
as Artiericans is show the
countries around the world
“wishing to do us harm”,
that we are a divided nation
that has lost its sense of
patriotism.
If we don’t respect and
honor our own administra
tion how can we expect other
nations to? If we don’t teach
situation. Sometimes they
will supply you with more
than one phone number to
try which will increase your
chance of getting connected.
If you have Call Waiting,
as most of us do, then each
time a call comes in you
are kicked off your Internet
connection. You can stop
Call Waiting from interfer
ing with your Web session if
that is your choice. To dis
able Call Waiting, while you
are on the Web, you dial a
code which your local phone
company can provide. It is
normally *7O in the United
States. This effectively turns
off Call Waiting while you
are online.
The Web can be a fun
place but staying connected
is a priority. Hopefully this
helps.

All that it means to be an
