Smith’s drives later answered Dublin’s
scores, sending it to overtime.
lix takes over Lady Panthers
Greg Nix, former Houston County
High boys basketball coach, returns to
the county with the mission to bring
Perry High girls basketball back to a
winning record. He knows how hard
that will be considering the results of
the past few years, but he is instilling
an attitude of ‘never give up’ and ‘play
25 games to play one.’
That ‘one’ game is in the Region 1-
AAA tournament in February, the one
that could put the Lady Panthers in the
state tournament. They will need scores
different than their Thursday home
scrimmage with Dublin, which the Lady
Irish won 59-46, but it was a 20-point
game, 34-14, at halftime.
“Our system fits the team,” said Nix.
“We got a lot out of our press, several
points off of it.
“They are buying into it. It could have
been (a 40-point loss). We need to learn
how to play fast. We will press and we
will break. I started with them this
summer, and we learned how to play

extra on their minds. One
of their assistant coaches for
several years, Mike Martin,
isn’t able to work with them,
but made a remarkable recov
ery from a Sept. 11 lightning
strike during a middle school
football game.
“Anytime you have a guy
like coach Martin, he brings
so much to the table,” said
head coach Chip Malone
about the Warner Robins
Middle School AD. “He’s
been around the kids and
has a good relationship with
them. They respect him. He
helps me tremendously.
“But I think he will be here
once the season starts (Dec.
2 at home). I don’t know
how many games or when he
comes, but he’ll be here.”
For Malone, he goes into
this campaign looking for a lot
of production from Fluellen.
There are two seniors who
carry that surname on the
Demon roster, Kenny and
Jared, and both bring explo
sive skills to the court.
“They are both doing well,”
said Malone. “Kenny is play
ing real good right now. Jared
has to come on a little bit
more.

together.”
If nothing else for Perry girls, outside
shooting can only get better. The team
was O-for-everything in the first quarter
from long range the entire first half. It
was at 4:21 of the third quarter when
the first perimeter jumper, a Jasmine
Davis 3-pointer, went through the net.
On the defensive side, forward Kenisha
Wilson blocked at least four shots and
tapped out a rebound that led to a fast
break. On the offensive boards, Lay Lay
Rountree followed in her own miss and
Diamond Holmes got to the foul line.
The first quarter ended with Dublin
leading 15-10 with Wilson responsible
for most of the Perry output on a late
stick-back and assist from Rountree.
Nix said, down by 20 at the half, he
set the goal to win the third period.
The Lady Panthers did that at 17-6.
In addition to the Davis trey, there
was an offensive rebound basket and
assist for forward Courtney Clowers
and two steals plus an offensive board
for Tiffany James. Wilson finished off
a long transition pass to cut the Dublin
lead to 11, 35-26.
Davis scored off a steal, one of three
Perry had late in the period, which
ended at 40-31.
Nix got three more steals out of his
team in the fourth quarter and a 3-
point shots made by Tae McGhee and
Clowers.
“Kenny got a lot of expo
sure this summer playing
AAU basketball and going to
camps. He got tremendous
exposure, and a lot of people
have been calling and asking
about him.”
To compliment what the
Fluellens are expected to do,
Malone will use several play
ers who gained varsity expe
rience last year as young
sters.
“We had a problem with
the point guard position last
year,” he said. “I think' we
got that worked put toward
the end of the year. Brian
Henderson and Maurice
Dudley are vying for that
point guard position, and
both are working real hard
and both are juniors. We’ll
keep plugging at it and see
what happens.”
Senior Johnny Enos had
a solid, consistent season in
his first full-time duty on
varsity playing at off guard.
Malone said he is a good 3-
point shooter and will join
T.S. Whitmore, another play
er who emerged last year, in
giving Warner Robins strong
outside threats.
“I feel if we get open, our
shooting will come around,”
said Malone. “We just have to
do a better job of rebounding
the basketball.”

In fact, the coach said there
really isn’t anyone on the
squad who could be labeled
as a true “post” player. He
said 6-3 Aaron Quarterman
is doing an “outstanding” job
for his size of taking charges
and playing defense after
spending all last year on
junior varsity.
“We’re leaning on him now
to control the boards, but
our guards have to rebound
just like the big men,” said
Malone.
“It’s really hard to tell
(where we’re going), to be
honest. If we can do the
things I want to do, we ought
to be decent. If we do a bet
ter job rebounding and play
ing team defense and have a
good bench, a good support
ing cast, we can win one or
two games.”
A good time to win one
or two games would be at
Region 1-AAAAA tourna
ment time in February. The
Demons should be battle
tested by that time, and they
even have late non-region
games with Perry and Peach
County.
“Coffee will be good, and
Valdosta will be real good,”
said Malone. “Valdosta has
size, 6-8 and 6-9. Everybody
will be bigger than we are, I
would assume.”
