Successful land lor new Red Cross hndmstrs
Special to the Journal
The numbers aren’t final,
yet, but two new fund raising
initiatives for the American
Red Cross Disaster Relief
Fund, according to a release,
are already considered a suc
cess. ,
In early September, the
national office of the Red
Cross launched a SIOO mil
lion nationwide fund rais
ing campaign to restore the
depleted disaster relief fund.
The Houston Middle Georgia
Chapter was tasked to raise
more than $55,000 by the
end of 2008 as their portion
of the goal.

COOK-OFF
From page iA
Events begin Friday with
barbeque teams registering
and setting up. Friday night
includes a barbeque judging
class by GBA officials. The
class is free and is offered for
anyone that would like to be
come a GBA certified judge.
Entertainment starts
Friday night at 9 p.m. with
the band Bradley Junction
playing at the bandstand.
The public is invited.
Saturday’s events kick off
with sauce and Brunswick
stew judging starting at
10:30 a.m. followed by ribs,
pulled pork and pork loin.
Another BBQ category
that amateur judges can
participate in is the People’s
Choice. All you have to do
is register and pay a $5 fee
and judge the participants
competing in the people’s
choice.
If you are a barbeque
enthusiast or an airplane
buff the Pigs and Wings will
offer a lot for you to see.
DONATES
From page iA
Recently, Therapups made
a donation to the Houston
County Fire department of
15 masks.
According to fire chief
Jimmy Williams, the need
for these masks is present in
Houston County.
“Luckily we haven’t had
to use the new kits yet,” he
said. “But in the past we
have used ‘makeshift’ devic
es created on scene.”
The cone-shaped plastic
masks, which come in three
sizes and fit snugly over
snouts, can resuscitate ani
mals suffering from smoke
inhalation.
The masks can be used on
dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits,
guinea pigs and even birds.
An estimated 60 million
households have pets; fre
quently house pets hide dur
ing a fire making it hard to
rescue them.
Many pets have been saved
by the use of the pet oxygen
masks.
“You never know when
your going to need them,”
Williams said. “I am glad we
have them available to use.”
