HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL Bear Brawl third places go to Warner Robins By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer After putting nary a scratch in the scorebook for the first half, Warner Robins High’s guard tan dem of Danielle Gazaway and Quinshay Williams combined for 17 second-half points Tuesday to lead the Demonettes to third place in the girls division of the 2008 Chick-Fil-A Bear Brawl. It was a bit of a bonus city and Region 1-AAAAA rivalry match up for this season as the Warner Robins girls defeated the host Houston County High Lady Bears 48-41. The Demonettes already held one victory against the Houston girls in the first region meeting on Dec. 12, and the third game, which will also take place in the Bear Den and count in the region standings, is slated for Jan. 20. Gazaway was one of three play MARTIN From page iA High School plays a bas ketball game, helping head coach Chip Malone lead the Demons to a victory. No, there was no visible evi dence of such a potentially tragic event. “I’m feeling real good,” said Martin after Warner Robins beat Upson-Lee for third place in the Houston County High Chick-Fil- A Bear Brawl. “I’m going to therapy about three times a week at Houston Orthopedics. I don’t have full feeling back in my feet. A few back pains here and there, other than that, I’m a lot better than when I first got out of the hospi tal.” Martin was hospitalized for two weeks. When he regained consciousness in the hospital, he said it wasn’t a case where he didn’t remember who he was, and he was able to communicate with the doc tors and family members. Much of that day’s events are lost. “I remember everything Warner Robins bowling results Through week ending Sunday GOLD CUP BOWLING RUBBBLL PARKWAY Starlighters Mixed High Scores: Kenny Boggs 257; Robert Meadows 248-652; Donnie Harvey 630; Celena Wilson 219- 568; Angela Lufholz 192; Angie Hebenstreit 505 Monday Senior Mixed High Scores: Dick Riley 256; Henry Owens 243-656; Joe Gootee 591; Maria Branch 216-557; Jan Collier 191-501 New Kids in the Alley High Scores: Conal Jackson 269- 743; Charles Graham 242; Erie Chisolm 669; Connie Williams 216- 562; Angela Armstrong 213; Tracy Joseph 596 Gold Cup’s Finest Ladies High Scores: Jan Daniell 223; Arlene Todd 207-554; Loretta Vandhitch 559 Rock and Rollers High Scores: Stephen Lackey 257-599; Michael Handley 234- 639; Amy Handley 221-558; Joann Kavarovic 204-528 Morning Glory High Scores: Helga Leahy 213- 573; Jennie Lackey 197; Joann Kovarovic 548 Happy Hour High Scores: Joe Pallini 156-298; Russell Dorsey 124-234; Ruth Ann Neil 148-294; Susan Shultz 145- 276 Ladies Church High Scores: Cindy Crowley 245- 672; Debbi boggero 189-475 Kings A Queens High Scores: Charles Bagley 299- 652; Mike Kilinski 256; Jeremy Patterson 676; Natosha Parker 223-595; Lisa Maloney 204; Lisa Kilinski 204-577 Tuesday Night Scratch Doubles High Scores: Joe Rutherford 266- 618; Mac Angley 223; Lin Taylor 589 Tiiesday Men’s Handicap AQUANAUTS From page iB of their season. A pair of freshmen, Kenyona Armstrong and Diamond Hudson, also chipped in with 11 each. Houston County coach Sid Baxley took this opportunity to give one of his freshman guards on varsity, Lasha Roberts, some court time. Roberts rewarded him with an 11-point effort. Senior Alexis Hewitt in the post led all scorers with 17. Neither county team had an impressive showing while fall ing in Monday’s Bear Brawl girls semifinals. So there was plenty to prove at tip-off, and it was Hudson who, in the last 90 seconds, made two 3-pointers off the bench and stole a Houston pass intended for the lane. Armstrong added a trey to lead the Demonettes to a 16-7 lead. Hewitt accounted for all the Lady Bear scoring in those first up to the beginning of the football game,” said Martin. “I remember the school day. “I woke up in the hospi tal. They asked me a few questions. That was days later. “I wasn’t in real pain when I woke up. I didn’t start having a lot of pain until maybe five or six days in. My upper back was hurt ing real bad. They said that was because nerves were damaged and the muscles were stretched. “I was ‘up’ until I left with the exception of sleeping, the little sleep I got. I could get up, but I was hooked to IV’s, so I couldn’t just walk around. I could get out of bed and roll the thing with the IV’s to the restroom and stuff like that. They keep you sealed up when you are in ICU.” Two weeks before the Christmas holiday break, Martin was cleared to return to Warner Robins Middle on a limited basis, that being two half-days a week. It was Roberts, though, who sparked a second quarter comeback for her club with two 3-balls. Hewitt got the ball back inside and tied the game 16-16. While the ‘visiting’ team had nothing for more than five min utes - missing two late lay-ups - Sharonda Aldridge pushed Houston County to a two-point advantage, 21-19, at the break. Aldridge stole the ball in the last second after finding Jayde Sparks for an easy two. Mobley had to go the majority of the action without senior forward Lakeisha Colbert, who re-aggra vated a shoulder injury. His sec ond-half plan was obvious: tighten up the defense and take the ball to the basket. Gazaway was doing just that, and the Demonettes opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run. Hudson sank another 3-pointer coach, but I haven’t been going to practice with coach Malone,” said Martin. “I’ve been at all the games, just helping in that way.” Returning to the Warner Robins High basketball games has allowed all those who know Martin through his educational position the chance to express their love and concern, even if it’s just been in the form of a hug or pat on the back. “Just to sum it up, I’ll say I’m blessed,” he said. “I got a lot of people pulling for me. I’ve got the kids’ sup port, my faculty members, the community, the board of education. I’m just ready to work.” It would be hard, though, to avoid all the questions about this experience. All he can honestly say is that he doesn’t remember it, if there was any instant feel ing of intense pain. “I can just tell you what people told me, people who saw it that day,” said Martin. While he doesn’t mind speaking to somebody one on one, Martin said he’s not interested in becoming a major motivational speak Mane 457 ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE Charity High Scores: Matt Drinkwine 256- 643; Phillip Murphy 248-670; Brandi Bray 179-474; Kathy McKenna 161-473 Women’s Lib High Scores: Ed Galloway 201- 496; Chess Hood 189-528; Elma Ross 198-498; Allie Drinkwine 187; Kris Fiveash 500 osc High Scores: Barb Bauman 204; Sandy McTier 199-539; Chris McDaniel 485 Tuesday Peterson Point High Scores: Jimmy Jean 290-770; Dan Bueno 269; Russ Blankenship 721 AFRC Mixed High Scores: Dan Desßocher 266; Louie Prieto 226; Dave Jones 657; Bob Walker 604; Willa Martin 216- 596; Cariren Des Rocher 204-521 Intramurals High Scores: Jason Dimuzio 258; Ken Wade 256-690; Gene Lehman Jr. 652; Nikki Lang 211-548; Lynn Radle 210; Tara Grippon 532 Friday Mixed High Scores: Cory D’Amico 268; Deric Morris 258-742; Corey Jackson 708; Carolyn Helmick 232; Kris Fiveash 225-599; Renee Lethco 584 RYA Junior-Senior High Scores: Jeff Wilson 188- 538; Andy Payton 185-464; C.-.dy Mcßight 202-528; Amanda Lethco 199-516 RYA Bantam/Prep High Scores: Daniel Bodien 98; Tyler Stella 72; Thomas Laney 284; Malik Jackson 224; Katelyn Lippert 65; Brittany Molargik 273 Pee Wee High Scores: Danny Klingmann 102-181; Brett Thompson 84-149; Lahayla* Sommer 83-143; Alyssa Calvert 82-151 meet where they will swim against swimmers from eight other states. He said his faith and family support got him though the ordeal, and while no one has asked him to make a big speech, he knows he would regret fully have to decline. “My aunt asked me to write a testimony,” he said. “I did. I just told Him I would do everything I’m supposed to do to get back. “I know a lot of people want to hear the story, but it’s just not me.” There is a long list of people Martin knows he will not be able to thank enough. It starts with the staff at Warner Robins Middle School. He said his coaches kept things going with football and basket ball games, and they didn’t hesitate to call with any questions. “It takes all of us work ing together to do what we’re supposed to do as teachers at Warner Robins Middle,” said Martin.
