Lady Hornets knock host TSA out of tourney finals
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Things were looking
pretty dark with about 22
seconds left in regulation.
Somehow, someway, howev
er, Westfield’s Lady Hornets
not only inched their way
into a tied score at the end
of four quarters, they com
pletely dominated overtime
on the home court of a tour
nament host.
Westfield’s girls defeated
the Tattnall Square Lady
Trojans 66-54 in over
time Monday to reach
the championship game
of the 22nd annual TSA
Christmas Tournament.
The finals were Tuesday
against Central Fellowship
Christian Academy, which
also pulled out a miraculous
win Monday - this one in
double overtime - over First
Presbyterian Day.
While Westfield scored the
big win, there was a loss
involved when guard Haley
Way suffered a knee injury
at 17.4 seconds remaining in
the third quarter.
“She was playing a super
defensive game,” said coach
Jeff Eubanks about Way.

Moreland also knocked
down two game-tying foul
shots with 10 seconds to go
in the fourth. That made it
54-54.
Cqme overtime, though,
it was all Westfield with
three field goals in the
post, one each from Jeannia
Rust, Mallory Eubanks and
Caroline Pfohl. Moreland
even had a key deflection
on the defensive end that
forced a turnover. Tattnall
Square never put the ball
through the hole in those
four minutes.
The coach said the inside
success was mainly due to a
change in the Lady Trojan
defense to one-on-one. As
for the shutout, it was his
own change to a 1-3-1 zone
that did the job.
Rust, a freshman, led
Westfield with 14 points
while grabbing five rebounds.
Pfohl had the double-dou
ble with 10 points and 12
boards. Mallory Eubanks
and Hanna Jones each had
13 while Sheldon Hiley
scored nine points.

Mt. Vernon tops WF boys in semis
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Jake Walls went into Monday’s Tattnall
Square Christmas Tournament semifinals
with high regards for his opposition, Mount
Vernon Presbyterian. He still held that
opinion after the Mustangs defeated the
Westfield Hornets 53-46, but the head coach
couldn’t also help but feel optimistic about
the direction of his own program when the
2009 portion of the basketball schedule
arrives soon.
“That’s the most talented team in the
state,” said Walls. “No doubt about it.
“I was very proud of our defensive pres
sure. For the second night in a row we’ve
had outstanding defensive pressure. We’re
starting to understand how to press, see the
floor, break on balls. That’s something to
build on.”
Walls, though, is still looking for some
direction on offense. Westfield’s only double
figure scorer on Monday was John Thomas
Rust, who had 10 points. Otherwise, John
Peake and Chris Brown each scored eight
and Wesley Rust had seven.
Matt Amrit had six points, but didn’t
make a field goal after hitting two in the
opening quarter.
“I’ll take the blame for that because we’ve
only had 11 or 12 practices,” said Walls
after a night where his team had its scoring
opportunities but struggled to convert. “I
haven’t done a great job of coaching offense.
I’m worried about defense. The boys are
doing the best they can with what they
know.”

Mount Vernon established a quick tempo
to start the game, and Amrit did well in it
with those two field goals, one assisted by
Peake. The Mustangs led by as much as
five, but the Hornets stormed back with a
steal and assist from Wesley Murph, to, W s
Rust and a Casey Young assist to W. Rust in
the post. . ! r.
The Hornets trailed 13-11 after one quar
ter, but jumped ahead 15-13 with help from
Kellan Shuford’s driving lay-up. Things
went bad for the Hornets in shot selection
and turnovers, and Mount Vernon ran off
seven points in a row.
Peake put in a second shot and scored
two more off J.T. Rust’s steal and assist.
That got Westfield within one, but with four
points off turnovers in the last minute, the
Mustangs stormed to a 27-20 halftime edge.
J.T. Rust took in a steal, and Brown
dunked for two from Peake’s steal and pass.
However, Mount Vernon was dominating
things on the inside scoring two baskets
on offensive rebounds and taking back a
blocked shot by Brown for a lay-in.
A behind-the-back pass in transition
capped off a run of seven straight that put
the Mustangs ahead 40-29 with one quarter
left.
Westfield never trailed by more than 13,
but was also never able to build any runs off
big defensive plays like a steal from W Rust
or other blocked shots. Mount Vernon also
had its own problems by only making Seven
out of 16 free-throw attempts in the fourth.

The Eagles were trailing 27-25
at halftime and 45-33 when the
third quarter ended. Northside’s
fourth-quarter tally was 22
points to just 10 for Telfair.
Demario Black, who made
three shots from 3-point land,
scored 20 points for the Eagles.
Kenya Ward was next with 18.
The Houston County High
