OFF - Houston County will have
a Christmas tree drop-off can
at the county purchasing build
ing, 2020 Kings Chapel Road,
Perry. The can will be available
Saturday through Monday. No
trash is to be left in the can - only
trees. Jeff Chandler, county envi
ronmental specialist, is urging
citizens not to dispose of trees
on roadsides, or in ditches or
streams where they can cause
stormwater issues.

- The January 2009 monthly
meeting of the Houston County
Republicans will be Jan. 10,
2009, at 8:30 a.m. at Sonny's
Barbecue on Russell Parkway in

PERFORMANCE - Northside
High School will present an encore
performance of their award-win
ning production of “Once on
this island” Jan. 11, 2009, at 3
p.m. in the Ray Home Theatre
at Northside. This is their annual
canned food benefit. Admission
is five canned goods or $5 at the
door. All proceeds go to the local
food bank. Northside Won# 14th
State 1 -Act title Nov. 15, at the
Clayton County Performing Arts
Center with “Once on this Island.”
This year’s win made GHSA his
tory, with Northside being the first
Georgia school to win the State
title for three consecutive years.

No bid may be modified, withdrawn, or canceled for a period of sixty days after time des

"Always remembered"
Jetty Lewis
ELKO - Jeffy Lewis, age 61, of Elko, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at the Medical
Center of Central Georgia in Macon due to a cerebral hemorrhage
Born in Houston County, she was the daughter of the late Zuma and Martha Peterman
Lewis. She was a 1965 graduate of Perry High School where she enjoyed playing basket
ball for 4 years, a member of Elko Baptist Church and retired from Brown & Williamson in
Macon. She was a very giving and unselfish person who loved whole-heartedly and uncon
ditionally. Sue loved trains, clowns, gaming and spending time outside in her garden.
She is survived by her son, Michael Holmes (Kim) of Canton; a brother, Bobby Lewis
(Leelee) of Elko; two sisters, Priscilla Floyd (Jack) of Gordon and Debbie Prater (Ricky)
of Perry; grandchildren, Chase Holmes and Austin Holmes; nieces and nephews, Wanda
Clark of The Ridings, VA, Victor Mizell of Perry, Amy Newhouse of Perry, Brian Lewis of
Elko, Randy Mizell of Perry, Matt Lewis of Juliette, Travis Prater of Warner Robins, Erin
Galloway of Kathleen and Jeff Floyd of Louisville.
Several grand nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 27 in Elko Unitetl Methodist
Church. Rev. Tom Teate officiated and interment was in Elko Cemetery.
Charlene Rackley provided soft music for the service and Tim and Susan Lewis, sang
“How Great Thou Art" and “Amazing Grace."

Walter Franklin Overton
PERRY - Walter Franklin “Bill” Overton, 80, died very peacefully in the Medical Center
of Central Georgia on Saturday, December 27, 2008. “Bill” was born on December 29,
1927 in Houston County and he lived there all his life. He was a watchmaker and jeweler
in Perry since 1950 after graduating from Perry High School and completing his military
obligation in the U.S. Army.
He was a lifelong member of the Perry First Baptist Church. Mr. Overton was also a Past
Master of Houston Lodge # 35, F & AM, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a Shriner as
well as a Kiwanian. He was the son of James T. and Hilda Brantley Overton, both of whom
preceded him in death as well as his wife of 59 years, Ruby White Overton.
Survivors include his sons, David A Overton (Mariann) of Perry, William D. Overton
(Marla Jan), Columbia, SC; grandchildren,, Julie Ann White of Canton, David A Wofford
of Canton and William C. Overton of Columbia, SC and great grandchildren, Alex and
Chamblee White 6f Canton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at the Perry First Baptist
Church with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be
made to the Perry First Baptist Church Organ Fund.
