PLUGGING
ENERGY LEAKS
The average home can
lose 30 percent of its heat through
small openings in walls, windows and
doors. Sealing those gaps can help re
tain warm air and lower your heating
bills by as much as 10 percent. Here
are some easy and inexpensive ways
to plug your home's energy leaks:
• If you have storm windows, in
stall them.
• Install the storm glass instead of
the screen in a combination storm
dtxtr. It you don’t have a storm dtx>r,
get one.
• To quick-seal an older, single-pane
window, apply an interior storm win
dow kit of plastic shrink-wrap film.
Use a hair dryer to tighten the film.
• Repair and replace any broken win
dow or door glass.
• Outside the house, use caulk to
seal gaps that are 1/2 inch or small
er; use expanding tbam to fill wider
openings. Seal cracks around doors,
windows, water spigots, the dryer
vent, pipe and electrical penetrations
in the siding, and where the siding
meets the foundation.
• Inside, apply weather stripping
around windows and doors. If you
have a pull-down attic door, weather
strip around the inside of it, too.
• To seal the gap at the bottom of an
exterior door, replace the threshold
with a new one that has a vinyl in
sert, which acts as a gasket between
the bottom of the door and the floor.
• Insert foam gaskets behind electri
cal outlet cover plates.
• When the tireplace isn't in use,
close the damper to keels heated air
from escaping up the chimney.

In 2003, Coalition soldiers in
Iraq were called upon to
secure the banks in Iraq from
looters. The soldiers burned
the Iraqi currency and melted
down the coins for scrap
metal....with one exception.
British soldiers led by Captain
Chris McGinley found roughly
70,000 pounds of uncirculated
Iraqi coins that were decom
missioned by Saddam at the
end of the first Gulf War.
Captain McGinley came up
with the idea to auction off
those coins in London and
use the proceeds to rebuild
an orphanage in Basra that
had been destroyed during
Saddam’s reign. Saddam’s
coins were sold, the orphan
age in Basra was rebuilt, and
the miraculous story of the
coins was only just begin
ning....
In late 2004, The Products for
Good team was offered the
opportunity to purchase the
collection of Saddam’s coins.
The team acted on the
opportunity and developed a
plan around utilizing these
coins in accordance with
Captain McGinely's original
intent... selling what had at
one time been Saddam’s
property to create good things
for as many people as
possible.
A product line was designed
that would display the coins in
a patriotic and high quality
fashion. The four coin patriot

In keeping with the mission to

possible with this project (and
in lieu of less expensive
foreign assembly), Products
for Good chose to assemble

CVI is a facility which

Good put the last piece of the
story in place...creating a plan
to donate over S2O million to
the families of our wounded
heroes! A percentage of every
dollar generated from the sale
of these coins (before any
expenses are paid) is sent
immediately to charities such
as the Aleethia Foundation,
Tragedy Assistance Project for
Survivors, Helping a Hero and
The Gerald T. Parks Memorial
Foundation. Products for
Good has been fortunate to
see its donation money at
work. Monies donated so far
have been utilized to help
families of wounded warriors
keep their homes through
difficult times, build new
homes for permanently injured
soldiers so their handicap will
not diminish their quality of
life, and to help build a
nursing home on a VA hospital
property...just to name a few.
