PERRYMAN CO. 36 Peachtree Street, ATLANTA, GA. A Plea for the Possum. The announcement that the Agricultural Department is attempting to grow a puckerless persimmon, fills us with gloomy forebodings. All who have known the persimmon in its native haunts, and loved it for its gentle and per suasive drawing qualities, will deplore this action. A persimmon without a pucker will be a violet without its odor, a presentation of Hamlet without Hamlet; a home without a mother-in-law. Should the department succeed in “ lutherburbanking ” this innocent fruit, all the romance and sentiment which has heretofore attached to it will vanish. But the loss of the pucker per se is not what strikes terror to our souls. It is the ultimate loss to our homes and institutions which would inevitably result. The ’possum, the most beloved marsupial of the family Didelphyidae, de rives the peculiar and delightful flavor of his flesh directly from his diet of persimmons with the pucker in them. Take away the pucker and the ’possum is doomed. In our complicated modern life, there are many sharply defined distinctions created by wealth, social caste, color or previous condition of servitude, and there is but one plane whereon all men are brothers and all minds are in harmony. That is in the love of ’possum and taters. This dish has preserved many a home circle and linked man to man with bonds of steel. The ’possum can trace his lineage far back, and can justly claim charter mem bership in the First Families of Virginia. Witness: S. Clarke in his book, “Four Plantations in America,” (1670), page 14, says: “Amongst the Beasts in Virginia there are two kinds most strange. One of these is the Possowne— the other is the flying squirrel.” Not much can be said for the flying squirrel, but what a long record of usefulness stretches behind the ’possum! He is peculiar to our Southland; he is one of our institutions. Such shib boleths as “open sesame” and “seven-eleven” are good as far as they go, but when you want to start a spirit, or do sure-enough conjuring’, “possum an-tater” is the tool. That unlocks every heart and warms the milk of kind ness in every breast. The man who, by reason of unresponsiveness to music is “fit for treasons strategems and spoils” is a tender-hearted humanitarian compared with him who does not thrill at the mention of possum-an-tater. If such a being resides in your community, go mark him well. The jail yawns for him. The barefoot boy with cheek of tan was well enough in his day, but the boy to tie to is the son of Ham sallying forth in the Autumn with his dog and horn by the light of the crescent moon, seeking the ’possum in the remote sequestered vale. This is a harsh world, and man’s judgment oft goes astray; giving much where naught is due; withholding where all should be bestowed. The man who discovered (by the merest chance, mind you), the succulent properties of roast pig, has been immortalized. But that high soul, that inspired artist, who led of inspiration first blended ’possum and potatoes, is unknown to fame. In some neglected spot is laid that head once so pregnant with celes tial fire. There should be erected to him a monument more enduring than mar ble. The department must be stopped. It should not be allowed to go on in its career of destructiveness. Let us rise en masse and condemn this project. The pucker MUST BE PRESERVED. A. E. R. My Heart is Always Pleading. By Arthur L. Hardy. My heart is always pleading now, and leading me to you Wherever I may wander, love—however far from home; My soul is thirsting for you as the rose thirsts for the dew, And I can hear, as in a dream, you calling softly, “Come!” And I will come, 0! constant heart, I will not rest or stray, Though night may lay her starless crest across my lonely path; For Oh! you know so well to soothe life’s griefs and glooms away, Sweet Peace, the child of Love, will sleep upon the breast of Wrath. And I will greet you at the gate—the love-light in your eyes; The sight of you will cause my heart to blossom into song; Your voice will thrill me like the sweep of angel minstrelsies, And we’ll forget we’ve waited, love, so wearily and long. 1000 New Maps of Georgia.
