stand be firm The industrial leader, the educational leader, and the
religious leader are the three who must lead us out of that which is false into
that which is true in our Southern life; —business man, teacher, and
preacher.
I place the business man—the industrial leader—foremost in the rank
because he has at his command the readiest motive and is least influenced
by the discouragement of reactionary forces. In dustrialism is primarily the
basis of organized society The Southern teacher is in some respects
the loneliest of patriots. He has to live by faith. His rewards in practical
effect on the body politic are not immediate The man in the
South the truth will set free at once is the preacher. His message and
meaning to our life as a public man is too important to be lost. Patriotism
must be defined in terms that include him. He is more than a passive sub
sidiary social and political assset. He has a Gospel that saves both men
and nations, and his priesthood is a priesthood of the public good
The safety, the progress, the glory of the South does not lie in the mouths
of those who say, “Let the South alone,” but rests in that nobler, braver
clarion, “Lift the South up. Develop her resources, educate her people,
cleanse her thought of perilous stuff and ennoble her moral interests.” Our
love and our duty belong to the masses of our people who are confused
by many voices. Let every man start where he stands to give love and his
loyalty a voice that will reach some other man. It is our own Southland that
demands us.
ROSEMARY LEIGH.”
Annie H. Smith.
The Neale Publishing Company has made a specialty during the past year
or two of issuing Southern literature, both fiction and fact. “Rosemary
Leigh” is one of the latest among the former class and it is a story which
takes the reader all along the history making line which is marked by the years
preceding the Civil War as well as during and after that period.
There is a most obvious moral turn to the romance as all the good peo
ple get adequate reward and all the bad ones adequate punishment ere the
story closes.
The part covering the grim Reconstruction Period is not characterized
by much accuracy, and the KuKlux Klan, which in reality proved the
entering wedge which saved the South for its own people, is regarded as rather
a law-defying, law-destroying element.
The book, however, is evidently written from the South, and it shows
a clear appreciation of the high moral attributes which distinguished a
stricken people in a time of dire calamity. It is a pure, clean little story
and could be given to any young girl to read.
