12 Our Weekly 'Periodicals. The weekly newspaper may be said to be the progenitor of all current periodicals, although when first established it was thought to be almost a piece of presumptions folly to attempt to “find news enough to fill a paper every week. ” It is needless to comment on the passing of the weekly period ical as a news medium, and yet that function of the regular weekly paper has not yet “passed” completely although with the advent of the Rural Free Delivery system it is safe to predict that within the next decade the weekly paper as a news medium will be relegated to “the things that were.” Farm ers and all rural residents are already finding out that the news they must have daily, and yet the weekly paper bids fair to rival in growth, in in fluence and in importance not only the myriad daily papers published through out the land, but the strong monthly periodicals as well. Advantages of a Weekly Paper. A weekly paper has two important advantages over both a daily and a monthly. The first is that it may be read more leisurely and more care fully than a daily and its policy therefore, is more fitly understood and appreciated. Second, its point of view and its report of current events is invariably more reliable than that of a daily paper because the weekly has had time to review the current situation more carefully and to report it more accurately than is possible for any daily paper. In addition, the weekly paper deals with current subjects before they have had time to lose local interest, which feature it is impossible for a monthly publication to combat ; and again, subjects treated consecutively in a weekly paper are much more effectively presented than in a monthly, be cause the continuity is kept more closely before the mind, than could pos siply be the case during an interval of thirty-seven days. Hence having established some of the paramount advantages of the weekly periodica], in a general way, it is pertinent to review special weekly publications which are familiar to all readers. The Reform Movement. Like the monthly magazines, the weekly paper of the country has had or is having its period of instituting reform movements. The chief example now in mind along this line may be seen in Bagwell’s Business College and School of Shorthand. Gaines, Eastman Business CoHetre, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., writes concerning the system: “We teach the famous Chartier System of Shorthand. The system is so simple that a child can learn it. Its principles are so comprehensive that every word in the English language may be written, and yet only ten simple rules are necessary to enable students to master the most extensive vocab ulary any stenographer may need. The system has equally as great advantages from the speed point of view as any other system of shorthand.” Bookkeeping—Goodyear-Marshall’s.
