Collier’s Weekly,
which began, and systematically carried out an investigation of the so
called “ headache cures” and other patent medicines carrying death-deal -
ing opium products in absolutely dangerous proportions. Tor many weeks
consistent war was waged against what was termed “The Great American
brand,” on the medicines which flood the markets and the homes, and which
are “warranted harmless.” Case after case was quoted, the names of the
various medicines being freely given and the public made familiar with the
deadly nature of the drugs bought and imbibed without question.
The courage and philanthropic nature of this campaign will be appreciat
ed when it is realized that millions of dollars are paid each year to just
such publications as “Collier’s” for advertising the very medicines which
this fearleess journal denounces.
“Food and Fraud” was another branch of the same subject against
which this publication fought, and so thorough was the investigation along
this line that fraud was even discovered and revealed in the communion wine
used at the altars.
The Saturday Evening Post.
is another weekly publication which has elected for itself certain philan
thropic plans tending to the enlightenment and betterment of the world at
large. From time to time this periodical has taken up subjects of general
moment and has given much space to the ethical development and improve
ment of the people.
Perhaps there has never been published a more educational series of
articles than “The Letters of a Self Made Merchant to His Son,” which
appeared originally in The Saturday Evening Post and which consisted in
the most pertinent and caustic revelations of business methods as they are
and as they should be, and which pointed the way for all young men who
cared to heed.
Latterly, a series of articles by Mrs. John Van Vorst on the “Child
Labor Question” is holding the attention of the readers of 'the Post because
they are simply word pictures of actual conditions as seen in Southern
mills the names of which are given fearlessly and freely.
The Literary Digest.
As its name indicates it is, in very truth, “a digest” of the news all
over the world, and the form in which this news is given is always attractive
