The Fiction of Today. Chas. Lamb’s rule for reading was “When a new book comes out, read an old one.” If such a rule was wise in those days, how much more would it be now! An enormous volume of fiction is being created, covering every im aginable kind of plot, and seeking in every possible way to attract the atten tion of the reading public. Thousands of books are printed every year, varying in merit from those that are really worth reading, to those that are extremely harmful. Many are neither wise, witty nor wicked. They are not books except in so far as physical form entitles them to the name. The illustrations are usually attractive—and the binding and typing sell enough copies to pay the publishers. The authors can’t realize much profit from them. The wonder which constantly nags us is why people write such books. We condone some conduct because it occurs in the heat of passion and is done without thinking. These books are without thought—but further “GLORIOUS PRAISE” More than 300 songs. 114 composers, and 153 writers. Round or Shaped Notes. Best Silk Cloth Binding'. Composed by W. H.
