They are deliberate and wilful misde meanors. How any man or woman can get his or her consent to publicly ac knowledge some of the novels appearing these days, is beyond our compre hension. And there is truly no end to the making of such books. The entire purpose of fiction has changed in the last fifty to seventy years. It is but natural that a change should occur, but it should have been for the better instead of having seemingly lost all aim and motive whatso ever. As an instance, consider the novels of James Fenimore Cooper—partic ularly the Leatherstocking Tales. It may be true, as some one has said, that his Indians “belonged to an extinct tribe, which never existed,” —but the books are clean and strong, and afford pleasure as well as instruction. Com pare the style and beauty of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s work with the best we have to-day, and note the falling off. We forbear the opportunity this gives of making the comparison stronger by mentioning Washington Irving. All these books were worth while and afforded some nourishment to the reader. Most of the reading matter of to-day yields just about as much permanent results for your time and pains as chewing gum does. In the realm of the sentimental novel, E. P. Roe and Augusta Evans Wilson satisfy our every yearning until we are eighteen to twenty years old. Their heroines are beautiful women, and move in the light that never shone on sea or land—but they are possible. Their men have red blood in their veins, and are your true dashing, cynical, athletic heroes of romance. Life lost for love, ruin risked for a rose, w'as a mere matter of routine with them. (I am proud of that sentence.) A duel before breakfast and a couple of dozen of wine after supper were happenings so ordinary as to be monoto nous. If we only had such stomachs now as they had—and their nerve— goodness me, they were built like the one-hoss shay! The stories in Gody’s Ladies’ Magazine in the fifties, are a fair sample of the best fiction of half a century ago. Compare the characters and the plots with those of the stories of to-day. Then the heroines were ladies— real ladies—and the heroes were men—a little chivalric and sentimental, but sure-enough men of decent habits and character. Those stories had no cigar ette smoking, no runing after actresses, no borrowing of others’ wives and no morbid or degenerate views of life played up as being attractive and be coming. Even then the course of true love had its bumps and failed to run smooth. Sometimes the wicked rival caused all sorts of trouble by intercept ing the correspondence; sometimes Mamma wanted Gwendolin to marry weal thy Percival Langdale who parted his hair in the middle, instead of poor, but honest, and oh! so deserving Bill Jones, who wore overalls and had a cow lick, but in the end love triumphed and Bill came into his own. Names were different then. Alice was never known to be spelled “Alys,” and Mamie rarely attained to “Mayme.” Authors were more considerate of the welfare of their characters then than now. Not a one was ruthlessly hurried to the jail or the cemetery to enable the author to reach a conclusion of his tale. Pestilence, famine, sudden death and sword play were instruments resorted to only in the extreme cases, when the stage had to be cleared and the curtain rung down quickly.
