was not killed by the hero, or pushed over a bluff—Oh, no! he was given a
small farm in another state and there the reader left him, a sadder and wiser
man, spending his last days in cabbage-raising and contentment.
What the books of to-day have gained over the old ones in style, they
have lost in sense—and the gain in dash is balanced by a loss in decency.
Give us back the sweet simplicity of other days. At least cut out the
morbid heroines, and the degenerate hroes, and let the plot unfold in the open
air, beside the brooks and woodlands rather than by the gaslight of the city.
Thomas Carlyle said, “Blessings be on the head of Cadmus,- the Phoenicians,
or whoever it was that invented books.” If he lived now he would pray still
more loudly for a patent upon the invention, and that infringements be prose
cuted to the limit.
One Woman’s Work For Temperance Education.
The death of Mrs. Mary Hannah Hunt, which occurred on April 24th, re
calls the great work of this remarkable woman for the cause of temperance.
Believing as she did that many evils which arose from the use of strong
drink and narcotics were, primarily, the result of ignorance as to the effects
of whiskey and drugs on the human system, Mrs. Hunt made an exhaustive
study of this subject in order to be able to give to the world fuller know
ledge of it.
Her researches along this line, and her discoveries served to convince
Mrs. Hunt that children as well as adults could be greatly influenced by a
thorough understanding of the deadly effects of alcohol on the human organ
ism. She decided that the way to reach the greatest number of children
most effectually was through the schools, and seeking the aid of the Woman’s
Christian Temperance Union in this work, she succeeded in having that body
adopt the effort to reach the children through the schools, and instruct them
as to alcoholic influences, as one of the departments of its work.
Mrs. Hunt then made a synopsis of her plan for instructing school chil
dren along this line, and with wonderful personal ability she succeeded in
having the plan to study the effects of alcoholic stimulants, made a part of the
