W Arnold, Vice-Prest., Atlanta, Ga. Book Reviews. lhe Man Between,” by Amelia E. Barr; Authors’ and Newspapers’ Association, New lork. Cole Book Co., Atlanta, Ga. Price, 50c. ‘‘The Man Between” is the title of the current month’s piece of Amer ican fiction which is assumed to be “good literature,” and in away repre sentative of the work of the best American authors which the Authors’ and Newspapeis Association are presenting to the public at a nominal price, i be work itself is absolutely unworthy of a review notice of any sort and the only warrant we have for giving it even momentary consideration is to call attention to the fact that the association publishing it has fallen far beneath the standard set for itself and to pretest against the issuance of such pieces of fiction with any sort of claim to their being “representative.” How Mrs. Bair could possibly permit a work like “The Man Between” to be given out a.-< coming from the same facile pen which produced in such charming style “The Bow of Orange Ribbon,?’ “Jan Vedder’s Wife,” and many other pieces of delightful fiction, is beyond our comprehension. It is surely a pitiable evidence either of the urgent need of a “pot boiler” for the writer or of the indifference to any sort of a standard either for her own work or for the good opinion of the public. The plot of the book is so indefinite that the only impression it makes on the reader’s mind is a mass of indeterminate events and semi-accurate de scriptions of life among the “400” of New York and in a good old York shire (England) family, one branch of which has been transplanted to Amer ica. Perhaps the only possible moral or purpose in the story is a sort of object lesson in the folly of elaborate church weddings hastily consummated, with a veiled sort of semi-moral lecture against the very apparent evil of a youno married woman s permitting -the attention of an unattached young man resulting, of course, in temporary unhappiness to her. We are not quite certain who is “The Man Between,” but we hope the Association will reform its methods before producing another representa tive (?) American novel. Mississippi Medical College.
