Singing For the Cause of Prohibition. Two unusual workers in the field for the furtherance of prohibition laws are Mr. and Mrs. A. Dobbins, who, for twenty-five years, have been con ducting song services throughout the country with the avowed purpose of inspiring prohibition sentiment, and encouraging prohibition principles. Mr. Dobbns, although born in the South, lived the greater part of his life in the middle west, where he met his wife, who was a Miss Effie Dutton. Together they penetrated further into the great West and joined Dr. Louis Albert Banks in his great work of temperance revival. The “Blue Ribbon Band” was organized by Air. Dobbins, and this band was one of the leading factors in promoting prohibition on the Pacific coast. Both Mr. and Mrs. Dobbins have carefully studied their role, and in the Boston Conservatory of Music they took a special course in order to more effectively conduct their work. This interesting couple have recently completed a successful campaign in Chicago, and are soon to return to California. At one time they penetrated the rural mountain districts of the South singing- to moonshiners and conducting- temperance meetings in as many as twenty different states, and in numberless towns and small communities. It is interesting to note careers of this sort, for the field occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Dobbins is comparatively new, and there must be room for many more earnest workers with similar intentions. * I Wish I Could See You Again. By BOOTH LOWREY. I wish I could see you again: There’s never an evening sun goes down But I’ve thought of you much that day; There’s never a quivering moonbeam falls But your memory brightens its ray; There’s never a bird note thrills my heart But I think I have heard you call. And the cold bleak days have a tinge of spring With your memory over them all, But oh when I think of the now and the then I wish I could see you again. I wish I could see you again: There’s many a hand I have clasped in mine To find in it no response; I have seen so many a fair bright face That gladdened me not for the nonce; I have thought as I looked in so many an eye That its depths were as cold as death, And the w’armest greeting from many a heart Has chilled like an ice cave’s breath, But your presence alone melts the hearts of men, And—l wish I could see you again. I wish I could see yon again: I felt when I looked in your deep, kind eyes I had met a long lost friend, For the kind fates willed that our ways should cross Ere we came to the journey’s end, But, oh, why is it they only crossed And didn’t go side by side, When the lingering li°ht of a soul like yours Could be such a friend and guide? For I think of you now and my soul cries, “When?” Oh, I wish I could see you again. My friend, I shall see you again: Your great soul looked as I passed you by, From the depths of your kind, clear eyes, And said, “ ’Tis a race to the bier and shroud, A succession of sad good-byes,” But our paths converge where the day dawn breaks And the shackles are laid away, And I’ll meet unhampered the soul that spoke Through your beautiful eyes that day. Must yon go, fair soul, from the walks of men? Goodbye—l shall see you again. * Less Saloons, But More Revenue. The radical action taken by the last Ohio legislature on the liquor and saloon tax question, whereby the license tax was raised from $350 to SI,OOO, is having a very desirable result. Tn the city of Cleveland alone over six hundre I saloon-keepers have notified the authorities that they will go out of business. Seme sixteen hundred saloons are remaining, however, to pay SI,OOO each, and the consequence is that the revenue from the liquor traffic will greatly increase in spile of the large reduction in the number of sa loons. In Chicago the license tax has been raised from SSOO to SI,OOO, and in consequence a large number of saloons will go out ' isiness. These saloons are mostly located outlying districts,—Exc -r .
