Prohibition Notes.
On July 17, John Milton, the venerable ex-Parliamentary agent of the
United Kingdom Alliance, was presented with a magnificent album testi
monial in 'loner of his retirement from his half a century of labor, at the age
of eighty-four years. The album consists of illuminated pages, an engrossed
address, with the signatures of the foremost temperance workers in the King
dom.
The United States refuses to be responsible for beer canteens in the state
camps of the National guards, as it was decided to permit each state to
decide this matter. Texas decuared a willingness to permit the canteen and
devote the profits therefn mto the improvement of the camp. Indiana, how
ever, strongly reversed this decision through its governor and no canteen was
allowed in that state.
Richmond, Ky., has eleven saloons, twelve churches, including colored, and
a Stu:.' normal school. The people over the entire State are taxed to keep up
fins school. We were glad when the legislature appropriated money to its
support, but we ask, is it fair for the State to be taxed to put money into
an institution where its work is compelled to be dissipated in a great degree
by tb.e influence of a saloon? For one, we do not think it is fair, and if Rich
mond people think more of their saloons than they do of their school, we
believe they should have choice of the two, and the school should be moved
away from these dens of vice. The United States government at the last
session of congress withdrew all support from old soldiers’ homes where
beer and liquor are sold. We believe this was right, and we do not think a
State? siiculd be taxed to support elemosynary or other institutions where
the people of the community are willing for such institutions to be overshad
owed by the liquor traffic.— The Kentucky Issue (Lexington, Ky.)
The great Convention of the World’s W. C. T. U. is to be hold in Tremont
Temple, Boston, October 17-23. There have been already 37 delegates select
ed from England and 23 from Scotland. London, Glasgow, and Melbourne,
Australia, are endeavoring to secure the convention of 1909.
Rev. William Durbin, of England, who is a noted writer on temperance
matters, has just completed a visit to America. He usually writes most en
tertainingly and accurately of his American impressions and experiences.
WAR ON LIQUOR AND TOBACCO.
The Kansas Anti-Liquor Society has adopted a new plan to fight the
liquor traffic. It is distributing free to all who write and enclose a stamp,
a recipe for the cure of the liquor habit. It can be given secretly in coffee
or food. Also one for the tobacco habit that can be given secretly. The
only request they make is that you do not sell the recipes, but give free
copies to four friends. Their address is Room 68, Gray Building, Kansas
City, Mo.
